WILLIAMSBURG, KY. — After the first day of competition at the Mid-South Conference Track & Field meet, the Tigers and Lady Tigers are both in second out of the MSC teams competing at the University of the Cumberlands.
Day 1 Results
The men's 4 x 800 relay broke the CU record for that event. Dylan Ford, Will Ballard, Adam Sandidge and Bret Crawford placed second in the 4 x 800 relay breaking a pervious school record by 13 seconds, set back in 2010 by Qualaun Reed, Geovanni Popoca, Dashan Craft and Tyler Nilsen.
Brett Pierce set the bar high today as he won the 10,000-meter run to start the day of running events. Pierce finished with a time of 34:03.24 as Wade Harris and Ross Allen placed sixth and seventh, respectively.
"I'm really excited how the first day turned out," said coach Hilary Lakes. "We had a lot of really great performances and PRs on the team. It was a great start to the conference championships and I'm really proud of all my athletes. We really went out and gave our maximum effort and I couldn't be happier with where we stand after the first day of competition.
"Tomorrow is going to be a big day for us as a team and we need to go out and do our best. I'm looking forward to see what we can do."
In the women's javelin, Madison Kaiser placed second with a throw of 31.6 meters Lindsey Burd (31.4 m) and Mallory Vest (29.19 m) placed third and fifth, respectively, qualifying throws for NCCAA Championships May 13-14 in Rome, Ga.
Halima Williams also broke a pervious school record in the women's discus placing fifth, with a final throw of 36.2 — with that throw, she also qualified for NCCAA. Williams beat Lindsey Burd's discus mark of 34.28 set this year. Kaiser rounded out the scoring, placing eighth.
Jazell Woodard-Johnson placed third in the women's long jump, leaping 5.24 meters while Gracie Martin placed eighth with a jump of 4.77 meters.
Elise Shainfeld scored points for the women's team as she placed third out of five athletes in the pole vault, soaring 2.65 meters. Also scoring points for the women's team was the 4 x 800 meter relay as they placed sixth.
Aaron Johnson placed second in the men's discuss, as he was the only CU athlete to score points in this event. Johnson fouled half of his six throws but recorded a final distance of 38.87.
Garland Webb and Paxton Wiley qualified for NCCAA, placing second and fourth in the men's long jump with lengths of 6.69 and 6.46 meters, respectively. Brayden Russell and Clayton Embry placed sixth and seventh for men's javelin, throwing 43.3 meters and 43.1 meters, respectively.
Multiple races only held prelims today, the first day of the two-day event. In the men's 110 hurdles all four athletes qualified and will race tomorrow — Embry, Wiley, Braydon Russell and Nicholas McGaughey. Battle and Wiley also qualified for the 100-meter dash.
Kaiser qualified for the women's 100 hurdles, as Woodard-Johnson qualified for the 200-meter dash.
The MSC Championship will continue tomorrow at 9 a.m. ET with women's hammer. Â
