CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — With one final chance to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials scheduled for next weekend, it was fitting that Campbellsville's Hannah Gladden punched her ticket today at the US Senior Last Chance QTT Qualifier.
Hannah Gladden joined five other Lady Tigers that already sealed their bid – Kayla Miracle, Tiaira Scott, Rosemary Flores, Hanna Hall and Shelby Hall.
The top two wrestlers in each weight class earned a place in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials being held at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa next weekend.
Gladden, wrestling at 69kgs and representing East Alabama Wrestling Club, was one of five wrestlers entered at 69 kg, making the tournament a five-round, round robin format.
Gladden won her first round match over Mikayla Mathews with a 10-0 tech fall. In round two, she was beat by two-time WCWA All-American from King University and eventual medalist Lorrie Ramos (10-6) but Gladden rallied winning three matches in a row to clinch her bid.
Koral Sugiyama, who finished third at the Women's University Nationals last weekend, was seeking a Top 2 finish. For the second weekend in a roll, Sugiyama rallied in the consolation bracket but came up one win short of qualifying.
Sugiyama, a freshman from Pocatello, Idaho, was wrestling at 58kgs and lost her first match to Laura Anderson but then picked up two wins in the consolation bracket to make a little noise. Sugiyama knocked off Arena Villaescus with a pin (1:18) and then got pay back, beating Anderson with a 4-1 decision. Moving into the second place match, Sugiyama met Lauren Louuive but fell via pin (2:15).
Campbellsville had another Lady Tigers competing this weekend – Kaitlyn Hill. Hill, wrestling at 75kgs, fell to Jimmie Wrestling Club members Dejshane White (13-0) and Mary Westman to end her run at qualifying.
