IOWA CITY, Iowa — Day 1 of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials is in the books for Campbellsville University's five wrestlers. Kayla Miracle led CU with three wins, while Shelby Hall, Hannah Gladden and Rosemary Flores each lost their only two matches.
The lone Lady Tiger who did not wrestle - Hanna Hall – will kick off the tournament tournament in the 75kg weight class.
Miracle, the fourth-ranked wrestler at 58kg and competing for Sunkist Kids, picked up two big wins over Axa Molina (Fall 2:59) and Randi Beltz (8-3) in the championship bracket. In the quarterfinal matchup with Beltz, Miracle used a challenge call, which played pivotal in flipping the score, to help her move into the semifinals.
That's where she met No. 1 Allie Ragan. Miracle battled and fought her way to a 4-2 lead but Ragan rallied for four-straight points and took advantage of mistimed shots by Miracle to take down CU's top wrestler, 6-4.
Even though her 2016 Olympic hopes were gone, Miracle kept battling. She picked up a win over Jenna Burkert in the consolation semifinals, 10-5, and that gave her a rematch with Beltz in the third-place bout.
They always say it's hard to beat someone twice, especially in one day, and this time Beltz got the better of Miracle. Beltz rallied for a 12-4 win to place third and bump Miracle down to fouth – the same seed she came into the tournament as. Â
"I think Kayla now knows that she has the talent to compete with the best at the Senior level," said coach Lee Miracle. "Now she just needs to mature and continue to improve the way she has over the past year. If she does that, she will win the spot in 2020. I am very proud of Kayla and how she represented Campbellsville University and herself at such a young age."
Shelby Hall, Hanna Hall and Gladden were all pinned in their first two matchups and lost via tech falls in the consolation rounds.
"The girls gained some valuable experience and now know exactly why I am so hard on them when it comes to technique and training," said Miracle. "For now we need to concentrate on getting ready for Junior World Team Trials in May. We just need to continue to concentrate on getting better every match and every practice. It's not a sprint. It's a marathon."
Next up, a handful of Lady Tigers will travel to the USAW Body Bar – Junior World Team Trials in Irving, Texas on May 20-22.
