Men's tennis splits on Day 1 of the NCCAA National Championship

CU men’s tennis split matches with Judson College and No. 22 Warner University in the first pool play rounds of the NCCAA Championship today.

The 22nd-ranked Tigers (13-9) met the Eagles (19-7) in the tournament's earliest match this morning. Campbellsville picked up an 5-0 win after sweeping doubles.

Both pairs of Vladyslav Ladygin/Zach Baulch and Alejandro Soriano/Alex Spalding won their respective No. 1 and No. 3 competition in sets of 8-2. In the No. 2 match, Adrian Sabrojo and Viktor Ahlbeck defeated Jonathan Moment and Christ Kerswell, 8-4.

The match was decided after the next two Campbellsville victories in singles play. Contributing the wins were Ben Ward and Alex Spalding in the Nos. 5 and 6 spots. Ward knocked off Joshua Gronowski 6-0, 6-3, and Spalding followed with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Moment.

In their second match of the day, Campbellsville found the competition of Warner University (12-4) much more difficult to handle. The Royals defeated the Tigers, 5-3, capitalizing on singles victories for the win.

CU held the lead, 2-1, after doubles play. Sabrojo/Ahlbeck defeated Rafael Da Luz/G. de Vauxclairs, 8-1, in the No. 2 spot. Soriano and Spalding also got their second victory of the day, knocking off Francisco Perafan and Renan Gambim, 8-4. The No. 10 pair of Ladygin/Baulch suffered an 8-2 loss at No. 1.

An NAIA Top 20 battle ended in defeat for No. 17 Ladygin, as he dropped the No. 1 singles match, 6-2, 6-1, to No. 16 Coutinho. Soriano was the lone Tiger to win his singles match. He defeated Da Luz in the No. 2 matchup, 6-2, 6-3.

Ahlbeck, Eduardo Mendoza, and Johan Fuzellier each dropped their respective singles matches, giving Warner the victory.

Tomorrow, the Tigers take the court again in the third round of pool play. Campbellsville, which is seeking to defend its NCCAA National Championship, will meet Belhaven University at 8:30 a.m.
