Spalding's late victory pushes Tigers into NCCAA Semifinals

MOBILE, Ala. – Tiger tennis came out on top in a close one against Belhaven University today, securing its spot in the NCCAA Championship semifinals tomorrow.

No. 23 Campbellsville (14-9) used every match in its contest against the Blazers (19-5), winning 5-4.

Alex Spalding played a deciding match for the Tigers in No. 6 singles. With the team score tied at 4-4, Spalding took Rene Ramos to three matches, finally defeating him 7-5, 6-7, 7-5.

Before the break, Campbellsville had only been able to convert one of its doubles matches into victory, falling behind 2-1. Vladyslav Ladygin and Zach Baulch paired for an 8-3 win over Harry Amor and Tomas Ojeda, but the combos of Sabrojo/Ahlbeck and Soriano/Spalding both fell to Belhaven.

Ladygin and Alejandro Soriano both blanked their competition in Nos. 1 and 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Viktor Ahlbeck contributed in No. 4 by knocking out Omar Lopez, 6-3, 6-0. Ben Ward fell 6-3, 6-0 in No. 5 to Pawel Tarasewicz and Adrian Sabrojo took his No. 4 match to tiebreak but could not get the win (6-4, 3-6, 6-3).

With the close victory, the Tigers are the two-seed in the NCCAA Semifinals bracket and will take on Oklahoma Baptist University Thursday morning. Warner University, which is the top-seed in Pool Play A will meet two-seed in Pool Play B Mississippi College in the other match. First serves of both matches are set for tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. ET.

The two winners of tomorrow's matches will face off on Friday morning for the national championship.
