SAVANNAH, Ga. — Campbellsville was only able to muster four hits off Point University's Dylan Griffin through the first eight innings and stranded eight base runners, as the Skyhawks picked up their second win of the day, 7-2.
Griffin struck out nine Tigers en route to his eighth victory of the season. Point defeated Taylor University in the first game of the Savannah Bracket, 8-1, to move into the matchup with the Tigers.
Campbellsville (36-16) will now be faced with an elimination game tomorrow, which is currently scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET at Historic Grayson Stadium. CU will play the winner of Taylor University or Freed-Hardeman, which was playing after the Tigers' game tonight.
Point (32-28) will now play tomorrow at 10 a.m. against University of South Carolina Beaufort – which defeated Freed-Hardeman, 2-0, in game two of the bracket.
Mario Morales (7-5) started on the hill for Campbellsville tossing 7.1 innings allowing six earned runs, striking out four and walking two in a 129-pitch performance. Griffin went eight innings, allowing only five hits and walking three batters.
Point University scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings before taking control in the eighth with a trio of runs.
All three of the runs came with two outs or a free pass given by the Tigers. Anthony Pardon reached on a walk, stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by
Riley Joyce. He came around to score on a two-out single by Juan Reyes.
Campbellsville had a prime opportunity to answer with bases loaded and one out in the bottom half of the second but Omar Smith made a diving play to his left at third base and started an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play for Point.
Smith came through for the Skyhawks once again in the next half inning picking up a two-out triple and scoring on a single by Riliani Familia.
Morales gutted out a solid performance until the eighth inning. He allowed a single to start the inning before being lifted by
Justin Phillips. Phillips struggled, allowing an RBI double, suicide squeeze and wild pitch to give Point a 6-0 lead.
In the ninth, Phillips allowed another two singles before
Irvin Ruiz relieved him on the mound and gave up another run with a wild pitch. The Tigers pitching staff gave up 14 hits for Point with Familia going 4-for-5.
Campbellsville was able to scratch four hits in the ninth inning but it was too-little too-late. Ti Inlow replaced Griffin to start the inning and allowed the bases loaded and only retired one batter. Will Ziebol replaced him with the bases loaded and gave up an RBI single to
Romello Carbuccia and sac fly to
Nestor Linares for the Tigers' only two runs.
Campbellsville was able to finish with eight hits, as Linares, Solano and
Casey Scott both recorded two.
