BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Campbellsville's track and field athletes fine-tuned their events in the first postseason meet of the year at the Bill Hayes Invitational. The meet, which was held at Indiana University, is used as a last chance to qualify for the upcoming NCCAA and NAIA championships.
This year's meet featured several new qualifiers and yet another broken record for Campbellsville.
The 1500-meter record went down as
Adam Sandidge crossed the line in 4:00.38 minutes, besting the record by exactly two seconds.
Bret Crawford, the previous record-holder, followed in 4:03.22. Both men, as well as senior
Dylan Ford, have NCCAA qualifying marks for this event. Crawford has also qualified in the 800, and Sandidge will compete for the 5k.
Brandon Battle placed fourth in the men's 100-meter dash in 10.87 seconds. He crossed the line in 21.74 seconds in the men's 200-meter dash, good for second place. Both times miss NAIA standards by tenths of a second, but Battle will run both events, as well as the 400, at Shorter University next week in the NCCAA meet.
Freshman
Paxton Wiley (15.23 seconds) and senior
Clayton Embry (15.59 seconds) ran NCCAA qualifying times in the men's 110-meter hurdles preliminary heat. Wiley placed seventh in the final heat in 15.2 seconds. Freshman
Garland Webb recorded a jump of 6.24 meters in men's long jump, which he will compete in again next weekend, along with triple jump, at Shorter.
In men's javelin throw,
Brayden Russell (46.99m) and
Corbin Harris (43.19m) both broke their personal records. Russell's throw qualifies him for the NCCAA meet, where he will also represent CU in the triple jump and high jump.
In women's javelin, two-sport athlete
Madison Kaiser set a new personal best with a throw of 32.07 meters, finishing seventh. She will compete next weekend at the NCCAA meet as well.
Ja-Zell Woodard-Johnson jumped 5.22 meters in women's long jump, placing 15
th. With those marks, both will advance to the NCCAA championships next week. Woodard-Johnson will also compete in the 100, 200, and triple jump.
The Tigers will compete in the first of two post-season championships next weekend at Shorter University. Campbellsville will send 20 athletes to compete at the NCCAA Championships May 13-14. The meet begins Friday, May 13 with men's decathlon at 8:30 a.m. ET.
