Abolina's big day helps Lady Tigers salvage split at LWC Classic

COLUMBIA, Ky. — Annija Abolina went off for 23 kills against Point Park University Friday night and the Lady Tigers needed every one of them for CU to salvage a split on Day 1 of the Lindsey Wilson Classic.

The Lady Tigers (1-1) trailed 6-3 in the final set when Abolina had two of her five service aces. After Maria Coelho picked up her sixth kill for a 14-13 lead, Abolina punctuated the comeback with a smash that split the middle of the court.

Setter Inoa Fields added double-figure kills with 11 to go along with 41 assists and 13 digs.

As a team, CU hit .185 with Abolina's .300 hitting percentage leading the way.

CU won the first set 26-24 on consecutive kills by Abolina and Fields, and pulled away late in the second for a 25-22 win.

But in the third and fourth sets Campbellsville lost its edge and dropped 25-16 and 25-18 decisions.

Taylor University 3, Campbellsville 1 (21-25, 25-17, 23-25, 22-25)

The Lady Tigers (0-1) could not overcome a 31-23 disparity in errors and lost their opening match of the season today at the Lindsey Wilson Classic, 3-1, to Taylor University (1-0).

Campbellsville edged Taylor 44-43 in kills, led by Annija Abolina's match-leading 14 swats. Abolina was CU's most efficient, picking up her 14 kills on 27 swings for a .444 hitting percentage. However, as a team CU was only able to click on .087 percent while Taylor University hit at .139.

After losing the first set 25-21, the Lady Tigers never trailed in the second, leading 12-11 before going on a 4-2 run that pushed them to a 25-17 win when Abolina scored three of CU's last five points on kills.

Alyssa Cosgrove (16) and Inoa Fields (19) shared 35 assists while Jessie Pendleton was credited with 25 of her team's 60 digs. Katie Johnson added eight digs, Fields seven and Abolina and Maria Coelho six each.
