CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Lady Tiger Volleyball took a big step forward today, downing Life University in consecutive matches to extend their win streak to five and move to 10-3, 3-0 MSC.
Annija Abolina had a big day, accumulating 31 kills over the two matches to help her team subdue the pesky Running Eagles (4-6, 0-4 MSC).
CU had things in control, winning the first two sets of the second match, before Life stole the third set, 25-18. But Campbellsville rallied in the fourth, pulling away from a 9-7 lead to win 25-13. The Lady Tigers scored eight of the set's last 11 points.
MATCH 1: Campbellsville 3, Life 0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-21)
Campbellsville (9-3, 2-0) used the strong arm of Annija Abolina to power past Life in the first of two matches against the Running Eagles today in the Powell Athletic Center.
The junior from Latvia hit an amazing .625 percent (16 kills in 24 attempts and only one error) to lead everyone on the attack in the initial match. Julia Fonseca and Maria Coelho had seven and six kills, respectively.
Inoa Fields was credited with 26 of CU's 32 assists. Jessie Pendleton and Savannah Moss each had six digs to lead the Lady Tigers.
Campbellsville trailed in all three sets before Life (4-5, 0-3) committed attack and service errors totaling 18 and eight, respectively. That helped Campbellsville to gain traction in each set.
Campbellsville controlled the ball evenly, showing only 11 attack errors and six service errors to go against five service aces. Moss had two of those aces.
MATCH 2: Campbellsville 3, Life 1 (25-21, 25-20, 18-25, 25-13)
Annija Abolina and Julia Fonseca collected double-digit kills, 15 and 13 respectively; to help the team reach double figure wins on the season.
Three players were in double figures in digs, led by Jessie Pendleton's 16 and 10 each by Katie Johnson and Inoa Fields. Fields had 30 of CU's 40 assists. Fields and Savannah Moss had three service aces apiece.
Campbellsville had another decent attacking match, hitting .280 as a team, led by Fonseca's .417.
Life hit .196 and was led by Janaya Simmons' 20 kills.
The Lady Tigers go on the road to Columbia, Ky. on Tuesday, Sept. 13 and a 7:30 ET matchup with No. 2 Lindsey Wilson College.
