LONDON, Ky. — Lady Tiger golf fired a team score of 306 and leads the nine-team field of the Bill Sergent Invitational after the opening round at Crooked Creek Golf Club.
The Lady Tigers, who have finished runner-up in the Mid-South Conference championship the past few seasons, are one shot ahead of defending champs and host University of the Cumberlands by one stroke (307).
Campbellsville led the first round with 14 total birdies and was second behind the Patriots with 50 pars. The Lady Tigers finished with a Par 3 average of 3.10, Par 4 average of 4.31 and the Par 5's were at 5.24.
Kylie Withrow has started her sophomore season on fire and led the Lady Tigers with an even-par first round score of 73 to sit in third place. Courtney Dye of Indiana Tech shot a two-under 71 to lead the first round, while defending NAIA National Champion Kaitlyn Riley finished with a one-under 71 to sit in second place.
Withrow was one-under after her first nine after picking up a birdie on the par-four fifth hole but dropped back to even after bogeying the par-five 12
th.
Senior
Ashley Goodin made a late charge in her round after going out in five-over par. Goodin bogeyed the 10
th but then birdied three of the next four holes and shot even par the rest of the way to finish with a three-over 76 to be tied for sixth.
Fellow senior
Cassidy Scantland played well throughout her round but the final hole cost Scantland three shots. After recording a pair of birdies on the 11
th and 17
th, Scantland tripled her final hole to drop back to five-over par (78) and is tied for ninth.
Anna-Marie Hyatt was right behind Scantland with a six-over 79 and is tied for 11th. Hyatt finished her front-nine at five-over but, like Goodin, rallied on the back-nine with a pair of birdies to finish at just one-over.
Sophomore
Michaela Jarman led the Lady Tigers with four birdies throughout her round but fell victim to seven bogeys, one double and one triple bogey. She finished the first round with an eight-over par 81. Jarman currently is tied for 17th.
Playing in their first collegiate tournaments, freshmen
Kayla Rodgers and
Laura McQueen showed potential on a tough course like Crooked Creek. Both freshmen rallied off a pair of birdies in their round to finish at plus-seven and plus-nine, respectively. Rodgers is currently tied for 14th, while McQueen is tied for 21st.
Northwestern Ohio (309) currently sits in third place behind Campbellsville and Cumberlands. Indiana Tech is just nine strokes behind in fourth (318), Midway University is fifth (335) and Bethel College is sixth (337. Behind them is a pair of MSC schools - University of Pikeville is seventh (349), Georgetown College is eighth (357) and Union College is ninth (365).
Round two of the tournament will start tomorrow morning, Tuesday, Sept. 13.
