Georgetown is tough when it counts, defeats Lady Tigers 3-0

GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Campbellsville had no answer for Caroline Ricks and Jenny Howell tonight as No. 10 Georgetown College defeated the Lady Tigers 3-0, 25-22, 25-23, 25-19.

Ricks (13) and Howell (10) combined for 23 of Georgetown's 45 kills while CU was held to season lows in kills (28) and hitting percentage (.085).

The loss drops Campbellsville to 14-7, 5-2 MSC, while Georgetown improves to 18-2 and a league-best 8-0 MSC.

The Lady Tigers made a match of it in sets one and two, being within 23-22 in the first set and 24-23 late in set two. But Georgetown used an ace by Courtney Grafton to seal set one and held off a CU comeback in set two.

The Lady Tigers led 18-13 in set one, but Howell and Ricks combined for 10 kills to regain momentum. CU fell behind in the second set 18-13, but a couple of mini runs saw the Lady Tigers inch back in with an Annija Abolina kill and a late block by Abolina and Jessie Stone.

Georgetown forced Campbellsville to use two early timeouts in set three as GC led 11-4 and 14-8. Campbellsville used an ace by Abolina and crawled back to 18-16, but a 3-0 run by Georgetown put out that fire.

Jessie Pendleton led the team with 23 digs while Maria Coelho added 10. Inoa Fields had 26 assists. Julia Fonseca led CU with eight kills and Abolina added seven.

The Lady Tigers stay on the road in Portsmouth, Ohio for a Tuesday, Sept. 29 with a 7 p.m. match against MSC opponent Shawnee State University.
