Battle of Highway 55 ends in 4-4 draw with CU and Lindsey Wilson

COLUMBIA, Ky. — It was the Battle of Highway 55 – soccer style – tonight as No. 8 Campbellsville and No. 21 Lindsey Wilson tangled on the pitch but coming away with a 4-4 draw.

In front of a packed Walter S. Reuling Stadium, the Tigers and Blue Raiders battled for 110 minutes but neither could prevail. A game that saw nine yellow cards, and two turning into reds, Campbellsville struck first but had to battle back in the second half to force OT.

The Tigers scored early in the fifth minute, as Ignacio Mangada scored off a rebounded shot by Pak Hei Chan. But it was Lindsey Wilson's Aleksi Pahkasalo that carried the Blue Raiders throughout most the match.

After scoring four goals earlier this week against University of the Cumberlands, Pahkasalo netted his second hat trick of the week and scored a trio of goals tonight. He notched his first in the 17th minute knotting the match at one – where it would stay going into halftime.

The second half saw six combined scores with Pahkasalo giving the Blue Raiders their first lead in the 56th minute – it was the first of four goals in a span of 10-plus minutes. Senior Alex Higdon delivered the equalizer just four minutes later with a 25-yard missile, but Andres Riquelme Rivas put LWC back ahead, 3-2, just two minutes later.

But once again Campbellsville rallied back. Diego Morales settled a deflected ball and matched Higdon with a long score of his own in the 77th minute – tying the match at three-all.

With two minutes to go, the match saw two late scores. Pahkasalo looked to put the Blue Raiders ahead for good in the 89th on another free kick outside the box but for the third time tonight, the Tigers rallied late.

With 30 seconds remaining, the Tigers were making runs deep into the LWC defense and it finally paid off. The Blue Raiders fell victim to a hand-ball in the box giving CU a penalty kick, which Nathan Heath drilled past Alvaro Cortazar.

The Tigers had a prime opportunity to score in the first overtime, as Heath got behind the defense once again and delivered what looked to be the game-winner, but was called for offsides. In the second OT, the Tigers had five chances, but could not find the back of the net as Cortazar picked up two saves.

The match was even all the way throughout, as Campbellsville had the slight edge in shots 19-18 but the Blue Raiders finished with the advantage in shots on goal, 8-7.

Gonzalo Sapena led the Tigers' defense with four saves. Cortazar finished with three for the Blue Raiders.

Campbellsville's defense has held strong all season, only giving up one score before tonight. The Tigers still own the longest unbeaten streak in the NAIA at 21-0-3.

The Tigers will now return home to Finley Stadium and Citinzens Bank Field to host Georgetown College, Friday 7. Kickoff is at 8 p.m. ET with live video and live stats available on CampbellsvilleTigers.com.
