CU lets big lead slip away to No. 2 Georgetown, falls 93-87

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Campbellsville led by 12 points, 78-66, with 7:42 left but No. 2 Georgetown College got hot with a 16-0 run and eventually ended the game on a 25-8 clip to upend CU, 93-87.

Campbellsville led by as many as 16 points in the first half, 43-27, with 4:16 left. The Tigers used the 3-pointer to take the early advantage, as Elliott Young drilled three triples in the first and another in the second.

In the second period, the Tigers led by as many as 14 points early, 53-39 after Andre Applewhite hit his lone 3-pointer of the night.

After keeping the lead above seven points for the next 11 minutes, CU ran out of gas late and Georgetown started to rally. With 6:48 left, Andre Applewhite and Georgetown's Quan Poindexter got tangled together running back down the court but instead of calling double technical fouls, the officials award Applewhite with a very controversial technical that ended up changing the game and giving Georgetown all the momentum.

The tech was proved costly as Applewhite and CU's Erik Kinney both fouled out in the final few minutes.

After the technical, the CU Tigers didn't score a point from the 7:23 mark until 3:37 was left, as Rod Lawrence knocked down a pair of free throws. But by that time, Georgetown already reclaimed the lead – the first since it led 2-0 – and CU didn't recover.

Troy Steward and Quan Poindexter put the Georgetown Tigers on their backs in the final 10 minutes of play scoring 27 of the final 37 points.

Poindexter scored six straight and eight of 10 before it was the Troy Steward show. Steward accounted for 14 of the 27 points, as he started the rally with a runner in the lane while being fouled with 7:23 left. After he made the free throw, Steward came right back down the floor and nailed the first of what would be three triples in a span of two minutes for the sophomore guard.

After a basket by Chris Coffey, Steward scored eight straight points to flip a four point deficit into a four point Georgetown lead with 3:57 left.

CU was able to work the lead to just one point, 87-86, after Lawrence hit a fade away jumper with 1:52 left. On the next GC possession, Poindexter picked up his own missed free throw and scored his final field goal of the contest to give the Tigers a three point lead, 89-86.

Campbellsville had a chance in its final two possessions, but Hagen Tyler missed a floater in the lane and Byron Dean missed an open 3 from the left corner to tie the game with 49 seconds left. Georgetown made free throws down the stretch to push its final lead to six.

Tyler led the CU Tigers with 19 points, hitting just 4-of-14 from the field but knocked down 10-of-10 from the free throw line. After hitting below 50 percent from the charity line the last two games, CU hit 81 percent tonight (21-of-26).

Lawrence finished with 15 points, while Young finished with 14 points and one rebound away from a double-double with nine. Kamall Richards, playing in his first game of the season, scored 14 off the bench by hitting three triples and grabbing five rebounds.

Poindexter paced Georgetown with 41 points on 13-of-21 shooting and 14-of-19 from the free throw line. He also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. After Steward scored 14 points in the final seven minutes, he finished with 17, while Coffey had 14.

Campbellsville returns to the Powell Athletic Center on Saturday to host Shawnee State University with another MSC doubleheader. Tipoff of the women's game is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET and the men's game will follow. Coverage starts on the Campbellsville University Sports Network at 1:45.
