Lady Tigers fall in Top 10 matchup to Shawnee State, 83-75

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — The Lady Tigers were unable to hold down Shawnee State's Jonessa Moore and turned the ball over 20 times, in an 83-75 loss to the 10th-ranked Bears on Saturday afternoon.

Moore came in averaging 20 points per contest and ended up with 31 today — one shy of a career-high — on 12-of-17 shooting and 7-of-9 from the free throw line.

The seventh-ranked Lady Tigers (17-3, 3-2 MSC) gave up the lead, 14-13, with 3:35 left in the opening quarter and was able to cut a Shawnee State six-point lead to two 21 seconds into the second.

But Shawnee State answered with a 10-2 run by taking its largest lead of the game, 29-19, with 7:10 left in the second quarter.

CU came right back and worked the lead to four points again, 33-29, with a 10-4 run but Shawnee State pushed the CU deficit back to seven at halftime, 43-36.

Moore paced the Bears (19-1, 5-0 MSC) with 21 first-half points, while Fox finished with 12 of her season-high 24 points to lead CU.

The CU deficit stayed from 5-8 points throughout the first six minutes of the third quarter but Campbellsville made a big push with Moore on the bench. Trailing by seven, 53-46 with 3:55 left in the third quarter, Moore went to the bench for the rest of the third quarter. The Lady Tigers ended up rallying with a 10-3 run and notched the game at 56-all -  the first tie since 4:28 left in the first.

Fox gave CU its first lead, 58-56, since the first quarter with a runner in the lane just 22 seconds into the final frame. But Shawnee State put Moore back into the game and the Bears found their groove again. SSU went on a 9-2 run, as Brandi Snow nailed a 3 and then picked up a steal and went coast-to-coast for a layup.

Trailing now, 69-62 with 5:44 left, The Lady Tigers had one final push in them. CU came right back with a 10-2 run over three-plus minutes, as Fox picked up an offensive rebound and layup to five the Lady Tigers a 72-71 lead with 2:03 left.

After both teams traded baskets, 73-73, it was turnovers late that haunted CU. Moore gave SSU the lead for good, 75-73, with 1:00 left and Snow pushed the lead to four with a pair of free throws.

Shania Massie turned Lexxus Graham over with 25 seconds left and she scored to push the Bears lead to six, 79-73.

Snow and Madison Ridout hit four free throws late, as the Bears hit all six charity stripe shots in the final 40 seconds to seal the victory.

Outside of Moore's 31, Snow finished with 16 and freshman Bailey Cummins had 15 for the Bears.

Behind Fox's 24, Jordan Doram was a force in the paint with 12 points but foul trouble plagued the sophomore and she was limited to just 16 minutes today.

Campbellsville was out-rebounded 37-30 and Shawnee State scored 22 points off the Lady Tigers' 20 turnovers.

CU now travels to Life University for the fifth and final game in a 10-day stretch on Wednesday, Jan. 18. Tipoff of the doubleheader is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Marietta, Ga., with WLCU's coverage starting at 5:45.
