MARIETTA, Ga. — A 17-4 run late in the second quarter sucked all the suspense out of the Eagles' Nest tonight, as the Lady Tigers finally turned away Life University, 88-49.
With their offense seemingly left somewhere on I-75, the Lady Tigers (18-3, 5-2 MSC) turned to their defense to help manufacture an 18-point halftime advantage after leading by only six at the end of the first quarter.
Life (5-17, 0-7 MSC) turned the ball over 22 times in the opening 20 minutes (35 for the game) and CU jumped in to steal possession 14 times (22 for the game).
Other than a couple of free throws by D'Arcy Draper and a bucket by Kierra Knight, it was all CU from about the 5:30 mark of the first half.
Lauren Turner scored 10 first-half points, helping Campbellsville to pull away. A late 3 by
Emily Fox and free throws and a basket at the buzzer by
Madison Kaiser led to the margin at intermission.
Campbellsville had to scramble to reach 30 percent shooting from the field with its late flurry in the first half. But the Lady Tigers improved on that and shot 38 percent for the game.
In a wild game that saw 53 combined fouls, CU used a 10-2 run late in the third quarter, eight off the hand of
Madison Clements, to push the lead to 28 points, 61-33. Clements hit six free throws (four on two technical fouls) and a fall-away jumper to push her into double figures with 12.
Clements and
Jordan Doram led CU with 12 points apiece and were joined in double figures by Fox (11), and Turner (10).
Campbellsville won the rebounding battle to the Eagles 39-31, with
Abby Miller (6) and
Madison Stewart (5) leading CU in that category.
The Lady Tigers return home Saturday, Jan. 20 for a 2 p.m. game against out-of-conference opponent Spalding University in the Powell Athletic Center.
