CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – In a tale of two matches, Campbellsville was able to hold on for a five-set victory over St. Andrews University, but could not overcome a -.034 hitting percentage falling in straight sets to Siena Heights University in Friday nights doubleheader.
Match One
Campbellsville (2-4, 2-1 MSC) won the first two sets but St. Andrews (2-2) wasn't going down without a fight and won the next two before CU won in five sets (25-22, 25-20, 16-25, 19-25, 15-11).
The Tigers finished Set 1 with a 7-2 run and started Set 2 with a 6-1 run to win both. Campbellsville lost its momentum in the third and fourth sets, giving up the two to the Knights. Holding on in the fifth set, CU came back from a 10-8 deficit with a 7-2 run to win the set and its second match of the season - the first at home.
Bryce Johnson led the Tigers in kills, tying his season-high with 17 and a hitting percentage of .343.
Rafael Cruz and
Adam Conklin followed with 16 and 15, respectively.
Hunter Monday grabbed a double-double with 13 digs and 45 assists, 11 more than his previous high of 34.
Match Two
Siena Heights (3-0) lost the Tigers from the get-go, with a 7-3 run to start the first set and never allowing Campbellsville to recover. After winning the first set 25-14, the Saints continued the trend with a 4-0 run to start the second set, winning 25-17.
Campbellsville started the third on a different foot, claiming its first lead of the match, 2-1, over the Saints. Siena Heights then went on a 10-1 run past the Tigers before CU answered with a run of its own to knot the set at 15. The rest of the night was neck-and-neck, but the Saints rallied in extra points to win 26-24.
The Tigers were held to their lowest hitting percentage of the season at -.034.
Johnson, Cruz and Conklin collected seven, six, and five kills, respectively and Monday assisted 15 of the Tigers' season-low 21 kills.
Monday and
Noel Camello each finished with seven digs, while Conklin followed with five.
The Tigers will look to avenge tonight's loss tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 28 against Siena Heights. First serve goes up at 1 p.m. in Gosser Gymnasium. Siena Heights and St. Andrews will start the day at 11 a.m. in Gosser.
