LEBANON, Ill. —
Koral Sugiyama swept her competition at the McKendree University Bearcat Open this weekend to win the 136-pound weight class, while Lady Tiger wrestling had another second and fourth place finish.
Sugiyama earned a team-high 31 team points in her five wins. She was followed with a runner-up finish and 25 team points by
Steffanie Hampton and 18.5 points and a fourth place finish by
Charlotte Fowler.
Sugiyama, a sophomore from Pocatello, Idaho, dominated her competition all weekend by not allowing a point until the championship match. She earned a forfeit victory over Anna Poyner from Missouri Valley before pinning Crystal Zamrripa from Missouri Baptist. Sugiyama then earned consecutive tech fall wins over Siana Nevares from McKendree and Solin Pieracy from Menlo College to set up a championship bout with King's Gabby Garcia.
In the final match, Sugiayama had to come from behind to tie Garcia 12-12 and earned the victory via criteria. The victory for Sugiyama is the second-straight after winning the King Univeristy Tornado Open two weeks ago.
Hampton, a junior from Onondaga, Mich., also dominated her competition until the championship match. She notched a pair of tech fall victories in her first two matches before pinning Lindsay Villarmia from Missouri Baptist in 1:47.
Now facing Alicia Reyes from Missouri Valley, Hampton lost via 10-0 tech fall to place second.
Fowler was one of four Lady Tigers to wrestle in six total matches over the weekend. At 116 pounds, Fowler sealed an opening round 10-0 tech fall over Cristal Reyes but then got a taste of her own medicine against Amy Fearnside in the second round, falling 10-0. Fowler then had to fight her way in the consolation bracket, where she won three-straight matches – a 10-4 decision and a pair of tech falls.
That set up the third-place match with McKendree's Tayler Resuriz, where Fowler lost 10-0.
At 170 pounds,
Mariah Harris lost in the semifinal to Nahiela Magee but faced teammate
Kaitlyn Hill in the fifth-place match, winning 5-4, and earning 17 team points. Hill finished sixth at 170 after falling in the consolation bracket with a loss in the quarterfinal round. She earned 13.5 team points.
Jesse Grubbs also placed sixth after an injury forfeit in the fifth-place match to earn 14 team points.
Ruby Ariosa-Danobeytia followed suit with a sixth-place finish, along with Courtney Grey placing seventh at 155 and
Shelby Hall placing eighth at 136.
The Lady Tigers are now scheduled to compete in the Dave Shultz Memorial in Colorado Springs, Colo. starting on Thursday, Feb. 2.
