WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — Cumberlands went on a 10-0 run early in the second half and used that to propel the Patriots to a 68-66 win tonight over Campbellsville in the O. Wayne Collins Center.
The Tigers had a shot to win the game, but Hagan Tyler's 3 at the buzzer rimmed out.
CU (9-7, 1-3) dug itsself a hole early in the second half after building a three-point margin at the intermission. CU trailed by nine (59-50) with 4:50 left in the game. The Tigers led by seven at one point in the initial 20 minutes when
Jalen Coates hit two of his eight points.
But Kelsley Wilkinson turned it over with 20 seconds to go and
Erik Kinney put back a missed Rod Lawrence shot to close to within 68-66 with 9.6 seconds to go. Bernard Samuel missed his bonus free throw, giving Campbellsville one last opportunity.
Andre Applewhite came off the bench to score 13 and lead three players in double figures. Lawrence and Kinney had 12 points apiece and Kinney led all players with 11 rebounds. His bucket with 3:50 remaining brought the Tigers to within four, 59-55. But the Tigers could never get over the hump.
The Patriots (14-3, 2-2 MSC) used 19 points from Wilkinson and 11 by Chance Morton, eight in the second half. But it may have been Marquis Yates who did the most damage, collecting 12 of his 14 points in the second half including a late 3 and a couple of free throws.
The telling stat for Campbellsville was its 8-for-17 from the free throw line.
The Tigers return home Thursday, Jan. 12 for a 8 p.m. game against Georgetown College in the Powell Athletic Center.
