PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – The 24th-ranked Campbellsville women's volleyball team won its sixth-straight match with a sweep on the road over Mid-South Conference foe Shawnee State University on Tuesday night at Waller Gymnasium.
Annija Abolina finished with a match-high 12 kills for the Lady Tigers (17-3, 5-2 MSC) and
Katie Johnson was the only other player to reach double figures in kills with 10.
Marcella Compeau compiled 21 digs against the Bears (6-14, 1-8 MSC) for her fourth 20-dig match of the season – all coming within the last seven matches.
Shawnee State got off to a fast start in the match scoring five of the first six points, however, Campbellsville counter with an 8-1 run to take grab a 9-6 advantage. The Lady Tigers never trailed the rest of the set and they extended their lead to as many a seven points, 20-13.
The Bears tried to string together a late rally after falling behind by seven points, but the closest they came was 22-19 and Campbellsville took the opening stanza, 25-21.
Campbellsville fell behind early once again as Shawnee State scored the first five points of the second set. With the Bears leading 6-1, the Lady Tigers rallied once more, but they could only come within a point.
The Bears continued to lead throughout the set and took its largest lead at 22-15. The Lady Tigers strung together a 3-0 run to pull within four points and forced Shawnee State to call its first timeout of the set. Out of the timeout, Campbellsville scored two more points to push its streak to five-straight points, pulling within two and forcing another timeout from the Bears.
After its deficit was trimmed to one point, Shawnee State put an end to the Lady Tigers' 6-0 run and held a 23-21 advantage. Campbellsville was able to tie the score for the first time in the second set at 23 and then it battled off a set point to tie the score at 24. The Lady Tigers completed the comeback scoring 11 of the final 13 points to win the second set, 26-24.
Campbellsville's first lead in the second set came at 25-24.
Shawnee State continued to get the upper hand on the Lady Tigers at the start of each set with the Bears scoring the first four points of the third set. Over the first five rallies in each of the three sets, Campbellsville scored a combined two points.
The Lady Tigers rallied from an early deficit once again and took a 6-5 edge in the third set. Shawnee State battled back and regained an 8-6 advantage, but Campbellsville had a 4-0 spurt to force the Bears into taking its first timeout of the set. The timeout did not stop the momentum as the Lady Tigers stretched its run to 10-1 and took a 16-9 lead.
Campbellsville had its largest lead of eight points, before Shawnee State tried to make a last ditch effort to steal a set. The Bears pulled within four points, but the rally came to no avail as the Lady Tigers won the third set, 25-18, and swept its second-straight Mid-South Conference contest.
After hitting .308 in the first set, Campbellsville was held to .233 hitting in the second set and .146 in the third to finish with a .223 attacking percentage. Shawnee State hit over .200 in just the first (.265) and posted a .139 attacking mark overall.
Campbellsville continues its MSC road slate on Thursday night at University of Pikeville, starting at 7 p.m. ET. After a schedule change, the Lady Tigers are not slated to return home until next Thursday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. ET against University of the Cumberlands.
