No. 24 Women’s Volleyball tops Life, 3-1; pushes winning streak to nine matches

MARIETTA, Ga. – The Campbellsville women's volleyball team won its nine-straight match after beating Life University on Saturday afternoon, 3-1. This is the Lady Tigers' longest winning streak since 2012 when Campbellsville won nine-straight in the month of September.

The Lady Tigers (20-3, 9-2 Mid-South Conference) are now in second place in the Mid-South Conference standings following the win and after the Running Eagles (17-10, 5-6 MSC) defeated No. 17 Georgetown College on Friday night.

After recording 19 kills on Thursday night against University of the Cumberlands, Annija Abolina continued to lead Campbellsville on Saturday with 17 kills and a .286 attacking percentage. Marcella Compeau set a new career-high will 33 digs against Life and Kate Harris' 39 assists were also a personal best. Compeau and Harris led the match in digs and assists, respectively.

The Lady Tigers took an early 3-1 lead in the first set, but a 4-1 run from the Running Eagles flipped the script in the early going. Life's lead did not last long as Campbellsville regained the lead two rallies later and did not look back.

In the first set, the largest advantage the Lady Tigers had was eight points at 21-13. However, the Running Eagles scored four-straight points cutting their deficit in half and forcing Campbellsville to call a timeout. The timeout halted the momentum for Life and the Lady Tigers scored the final four points to win the set, 25-17.

Life got out on the front foot in the second second set and Campbellsville did not have the lead until 8-7. The Lady Tigers continued to hold a slight edge over the Running Eagles through the next 16 rallies. Life tied the set at 16 and then took the lead on the next rally. Its largest lead in the set was three points, but Campbellsville erased a 22-19 deficit and tied the score, 22-22.

The Lady Tiger run was cutoff at three and the Running Eagles scored three of the final four points to take the second set, 25-23, and tie the match at one set apiece.

Campbellsville used a 5-0 run early in the third set to flip a 3-2 deficit into a 7-3 lead. The Lady Tigers continued to pull away and did not look back as their lead stretched to 10 points at the end of the set.

After Campbellsville's run at the beginning of the third set, the closest Life got was three points – which came at 7-4 and then again at 16-13. The Lady Tigers regained a one-set lead over the Running Eagles with a 25-15 win in the third set.

The fourth set was played within a nine-point window with the Campbellsville's largest lead being six points and Life's was three points. The set also saw the score tied 13 times all coming within the first 24 rallies.

The Running Eagles took their three-point lead right out the gate in the fourth set holding a 4-1 edge over the Lady Tigers. Campbellsville finally hedged ahead at 7-6 and it never trailed for the remainder of the match.

With the scored tied at 14, the Lady Tigers created some separation for the first time in the set with a 5-0 run. Life staved off a pair of match points to pull within four, but Abolina closed out the match with her 17th and final kill as Campbellsville won the set, 25-20, and the match, 3-1.

Saturday's victory pushed the Lady Tigers' winning streak to nine matches, which is its longest of the season.

Campbellsville is back in action on Tuesday night with a top-25 match against No. 17 Georgetown at 7 p.m. ET in Georgetown, Ky.
