GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The 24th-ranked Campbellsville women's volleyball saw its upset bid of No. 17 Georgetown College come up short in a 3-2 contest at Davis-Reid Alumni Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
Annija Abolina led Campbellsville (20-4, 9-3 Mid-South Conference) with 17 kills, while also chipping in with seven digs.
Maria Coelho recorded 13 kills and Kate Harris continues to set new personal bests with 46 assists against Georgetown (15-3, 10-3 MSC).
Marcella Compeau recorded a match-high 31 digs and has now recorded 30-dig performances in back-to-back matches.
Caroline Ricks finished with a match-high 23 kills and hit .417 overall. Ricks was only player in the match with more than one attack attempt to hit over .240. Kassidy Rauh finished 52 assists to lead all individuals in the contest.
Georgetown got off to a fast start and jumped up out to a 7-2 advantage, forcing Campbellsville to take a timeout. A quick two points from Campbellsville pulled the first set back to a three-point spread, but Georgetown went ahead by six points following a 3-0 run.
Campbellsville could not overcome its early deficit as Georgetown took the opening set, 25-18.
After Georgetown started the second set with a 3-2 edge, Campbellsville battled back with the next two points to take its first lead of the match at 4-3. The Campbellsville run pushed to six-straight points and the lead stretched to 8-3 for Campbellsville.
Georgetown worked its way back into the set and pulled within a point at 9-8 and later tied the set at 10 and then 11.
Campbellsville found a 4-0 run to stretch a 14-13 lead into an 18-13 advantage. Georgetown did not go away and tied the score at 20. The close knit affair continued as Georgetown called a timeout after Campbellsville hedged ahead, 21-20. The timeout flipped the momentum and Georgetown went on top, 23-21, then held Campbellsville at set point twice. However, Campbellsville staved off both set points and scored three-straight points to win the set, 27-25.
The second set came to a close on a block from Olivia Jarvis, which was Campbellsville's first of the match compared to 13 from Georgetown through two sets. Georgetown finished the match with 20 blocks compared to seven from Campbellsville.
Momentum carried over into the third set for Campbellsville as it went on a 6-1 run to force Georgetown to call an early timeout. The Georgetown timeouts paid dividends as it killed the Campbellsville momentum. Georgetown took its second timeout in the set trailing 11-7 and Georgetown came out on a 5-0 run to take its first lead of the set at 12-11.
A service error from Ashton Meckle doused the Georgetown run two points later. Campbellsville did not back down and rallied to regain a 16-15 lead. Over the next 15 rallies, the score was tied eight different times with each side only scoring back-to-back points once. Campbellsville took a timeout with the score tied at 23, and the timeout paid off as Campbellsville scored two-straight points to win the set, 25-23, and take 2-1 lead in the match.
Georgetown came out swinging in the fourth set looking to keep the match going. Georgetown started the set on a 10-3 run forcing Campbellsville take both of its timeouts. Over the first 13 rallies, Georgetown hit .571 and forced Campbellsville to make five attacking errors. Georgetown ran away with the fourth set, 25-11, and forced the decisive fifth set.
Campbellsville got out on the front foot in the fifth set with a 5-2 run, which pushed Georgetown into its first timeout of the set. The Georgetown timeouts continued to halt any Campbellsville momentum as a service error from Compeau helped spark Georgetown to pull within one point.
After a Campbellsville timeout, Georgetown tied the score at six and then held an 8-6 edge at the turn. Campbellsville tied the score in the fifth set at eight, but could not take over the lead.
Trailing 12-9, Campbellsville cut its deficit to one point three times over the final seven rallies, but Georgetown always answered back and did not allow Campbellsville to tie the set. Campbellsville battled off a match point, but Jenny Howell closed the match for Georgetown with a kill and secured a 15-13 victory in the fifth and final set.
With the loss on Tuesday, Campbellsville slips to third in the MSC standings and is now a half-game behind Georgetown. Campbellsville still has No. 1 Lindsey Wilson College and Cumberland University on its conference slate, while Georgetown has one match left against Cumberland.
Campbellsville has now lost its last 17 matches against Georgetown dating back to Sept. 20, 2011.
Next up, Campbellsville returns to Georgetown on Friday and Saturday to take part in the Boneyard Brawl.
