GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The Campbellsville women's volleyball team split its final two matches of Georgetown College's Boneyard Brawl with a 3-1 loss to Indiana Wesleyan University and a 3-0 win over Central State University on Saturday.
Kate Harris recorded 52 assists from the Lady Tigers (22-6) on the day, while
Marcella Compeau had 30 digs over the two matches. After hitting .078 against the Wildcats (24-10), Campbellsville hit .365 against the Marauders (6-24).
Indiana Wesleyan 3, No. 24 Campbellsville 1
Indiana Wesleyan jumped out to a 5-2 advantage in the first set. The Wildcats kept their foot on the gas and led throughout. The only lead Campbellsville had was 1-0 as it scored the first point of the match. Indiana Wesleyan took the opening set, 25-15.
The second set mirrored the first with the Lady Tigers coming out slow and Indiana Wesleyan taking over the momentum. The Wildcats led 7-1, but Campbellsville fought back and tied the score at 18. The Lady Tigers tied the score five times, but could never take lead. Indiana Wesleyan scored three-straight points to win the second set, 25-22.
A pair of runs started the third set with Indiana Wesleyan scoring the first five points, followed by a 6-0 run from the Lady Tigers for their first lead of the match. The back-and-forth battle continued to lead throughout the third set as Campbellsville looked to stay alive in the match.
The lead changed hands five times in the third set and Indiana Wesleyan had it largest lead of six, while the Lady Tigers took its largest lead of four points at the end of the set. After Campbellsville went on a 6-0 run to pull ahead, 20-17, the Wildcats battled back with four-straight points. The Lady Tigers closed out the third set with five-straight points to force a fourth set with a 25-21 victory.
A back-and-fourth battle broke out in the fourth set, but the lead only changed hands twice. The largest lead in the set was five points from Indiana Wesleyan to closeout the set. Campbellsville only led for four rallies during the set. The Wildcats jumped ahead, 22-17, and went on to win the match, 25-20, and the match, 3-1.
Abolina led the Lady Tigers with 11 kills, while Harris recorded 31 assists.
No. 24 Campbellsville 3, Central State 0
Campbellsville rebounded and rolled to a three-set victory over NCAA Division II Central State. The Lady Tigers scored the first eight points of the match and never looked back. Campbellsville led by as many as nine points, en route to winning the first set, 25-16.
The Lady Tigers picked up where they left off in the first set and went ahead 8-1, highlighted by a 6-0 run to start. Campbellsville was clicking on all cylinders to stretch its lead to 16 points and won the set, 25-9.
Central State took its first lead of the match with the first point in the third set and then led 4-3 for its final lead of the match. Campbellsville then scored the next six points to take a 9-4 lead and it stretched its lead to 17-7.
The Marauders did not go away as they scored six-consecutive points, however, Campbellsville closed out the set with eight of the final 11 points to win the set, 25-16. The Lady Tigers capped off the tournament with its second sweep in as many days.
Campbellsville returns to action on Tuesday night against Cumberland University to start at three-match home stand at 7 p.m. ET.
