CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The 13th-ranked Campbellsville men's soccer team and No. 24 Cumberland University played to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night at Finley Stadium.
Yudai Yamauchi scored the lone goal for the Tigers (7-1-1, 1-0-1 Mid-South Conference), while
Andreas Nota made four saves in 110 minutes of action. Tyler Watson scored the lone goal for the Phoenix (8-1-1, 1-0-1 MSC).
In a physical contest that saw eight total cards – six yellow and two red – started right away as
Nathan Heath was shown a yellow card 29 seconds into the contest and
Francesco Ambrosino booked with a yellow card in the 12th minute.
Cumberland generated some early scoring chances as they had five shots in the first half compared to one from Campbellsville that did not come until the 41st minute.
The Phoenix broke the scoreless match in the 38th minute after Bakary Bagayogo lined up for a free kick from the right wing, 40 yards out. Bagayogo's kick was sent into the box and flew over multiple players' heads and landed just inside the six-yard box in front of Nota. Watson punched in the loose ball with his right foot and his shot was just out of Nota's reach to the near post.
Moments after the goal, Austin Morenzoni was shown a yellow card for a hard foul and he was later shown a red card in the 39th minute to put Cumberland a man down.
Campbellsville did not capitalize with the extra man until the 56th minute. Yamauchi tied the match with his third goal of the season.
Jorge Martinez raced down the left wing and sent in a cross that fell to
Sam Wills and with his back to the goal, Wills chipped the ball over himself and a Phoenix defender to find Yamauchi. Yamauchi picked up the ball at the far post with two defenders behind him a slotted just inside the right post to tie the match, 1-1.
Following the goal, Campbellsville looked to hang onto the momentum, but the shorthanded Cumberland side generated three shots on goal in four minutes, while also forcing three corner kicks in that span.
Neither team was able to capitalize on their scoring chances as the game was sent into extra time. In the first 10-minute overtime period, Brian McNamara sent the only shot toward goal, but his attempt was wide.
The second overtime period saw both team pushing for the golden goal. In the final minute of play, the Tigers had a pair of shots in helter-skelter action trying to beat the clock.
Cameron Badenhorst had the first scoring chance, but Bennet Strutz recorded his third and final save of the night.
Ignacio Mangada then played a corner kick to the far post and
Daniel Nimmo tried to chip the ball over a Cumberland defender and into the net, but his attempt was blocked. As time was expiring, the Tigers had one last opportunity with a corner kick, but Wills' ball into the box was cleared away by the Phoenix defense as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
After recording just one shot in the first half, Campbellsville outshot Cumberland, 12-10 for the match. However, the Phoenix held 5-4 edge in shots on goal.
The Tigers continue their Mid-South Conference schedule on Friday night at 8 p.m. ET against University of Pikeville at Finley Stadium.
