CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The 12th-ranked Campbellsville men's soccer team stretched its unbeaten streak to four matches with a 3-0 win over University of Pikeville on Friday night at Finley Stadium.
The Tigers (8-1-1, 2-0-1 Mid-South Conference) had three different goal scorers with
Thomas Edge and
Scott Brooksbank recording their first goals of the season.
Ignacio Mangada notched his team leading eighth goal against the Bears (2-8-1, 0-3-0 MSC).
In the first half, Campbellsville controlled the possession, but it could not generate a goal. The Tigers racked up 10 shots compared to just two from Pikeville. Both of the Bears shots were on target, while Campbellsville only had three shots on goal.
Eric Bernabeu had the best scoring opportunity in the first 45 minutes of play in the 39th minute. After
Andreas Nota rushed out of the penalty area to clear out a long pass, Bernabeu corralled the loose ball 20 yards from goal. Bernabeu tried to lace a shot toward the open net, but Nota made a sprawling save at the top of the 18-yard box to keep the match scoreless.
Mangada had an early scoring chance in the second half, where
Sam Wills played the play the ball through to Mangada – who split through the middle of the Pikeville defense – and with just the goalkeeper to be beat he pushed his shot wide of the goal.
The Tigers finally found a breakthrough in the 56th minute. Mangada played in a corner kick into the middle of the 18-yard box, where Edge – who was unmarked – volleyed home his first goal of the season.
Campbellsville continued to push forward and scored its second goal in two minutes.
Mark Callaghan shot the ball from the right wing and the rebound sputtered out toward the back post and Brooksbank finished the shot to double the Tigers lead.
Mangada iced the matched in the 77th minute after Wills centered the ball from the right wing and Mangada slotted home his team-leading eighth goal of the year.
Nota made both saves for the Tigers in the first half, as the Bears did not record a shot in the second half until the 83rd minute.
Antonio Barona Bonet played the final 32 minutes in goal to secure the shutout en route to Campbellsville's 3-0 victory.
The Tigers are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. ET against Life University on the road in Marietta, Georgia.
