ROCHESTER, Minn. —
Kayla Miracle swept her way through the 60kg/132 lbs. bracket and secured a spot on the United States' U23 World Team. CU also had a pair of Lady Tigers -
Mariah Harris and
Charlotte Fowler - finish second and third, respectively, at the Mayo Civic Center.
Miracle, a 2017 U.S. Senior National Team member, competed in the finals series against past Cadet World champion Teshya Alo. Miracle won the first match by injury default, when Alo was not able to compete. However, in round two, Alo had been cleared medically, and they wrestled the bout, with Miracle claiming an 11-3 victory.
Earlier in the day, Miracle pinned De'anna Prince in 1:58 and picked up a pair of tech fall victories over Emma Bruntill and Abigail Nette before moving into the championship match.
In addition to Miracle, the Lady Tigers had three others competing this weekend and all three made noise. The biggest upset of the day came in the semifinals at 75 kg/165 lbs., as
Mariah Harris of Campbellsville University edged 2017 U.S. Senior World Team member Victoria Francis of the Titan Mercury WC, 2-1.
Harris, who was seeded No. 5, scored on a step out and a passivity point and held off top-seeded Francis' offense. Harris was seventh in the 2017 WCWA Women's College Nationals, while Francis won two WCWA titles when she was in college at Lindenwood.
"I didn't know who I wrestled before I went into the match, I don't look at the brackets anymore," said Harris. "I just went and wrestled. I didn't know who she was. After, Kayla (Miracle) asked, 'do you know who you wrestled?' and I said 'no.' She said she was on the Senior World Team. So that was pretty big. It is all about how you wrestle. I don't care about the name at all."
Harris ended up falling in the championship bouts to Rachel Watter, 8-0 and 3-1, in the best of three finals.
Charlotte Fowler and
Koral Sugiyama also wrestled for CU. Fowler, competing at 48kg/105.5 lbs., reached the semifinal round before falling to Maria Vidales, 7-2.
Earlier in the day, Fowler earned a 10-0 tech fall over Nina Pham but her loss in the semifinal moved her into the consolation bracket. She ended up earning another tech fall, 14-4, over Kateri Rowell setting up a third-place match with Aleeah Gould. Fowler went on to win easily by another tech fall, 10-0.
Sugiyama won her first match of the day, 7-6, over Alexia Ward but fell to Abigail Nette, 9-6, dropping her to the consolation bracket. In that bracket, she was pinned by Emma Bruntil in 1:10 dropping her out of the consolation third round.
The Lady Tigers will now have a week off before travel to the Emmanuel College Open in Franklin Springs, Ga. on Saturday, Oct. 14.
