WKU's defense stymies Men’s Basketball in 92-51 exhibition loss on Wednesday night at Diddle Arena

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Campbellsville men's basketball team dropped a 92-51 contest to NCAA Division I Western Kentucky University on Wednesday night in an exhibition contest at E.A. Diddle Arena.
 
The Tigers struggled on offense shooting 30.6 percent from the floor and making just 8-of-31 three-point attempts. Tim Coleman recorded 18 points to lead Campbellsville, while Shawn Johnson was the only other Tiger in double figures with 11 points. Taveion Hollingsworth led all scorers with 20 points, while Justin Johnson and Dwight Coleby each racked up double doubles. The Hilltoppers had six of its seven players score in double figures.
 
WKU threw the first punch running out to a 19-7 lead over Campbellsville, but the Tigers countered with an 8-0 run to pull within four points at the second media timeout in the first half. Campbellsville pulled within a basket after scoring the first points out of the timeout to extend its run to 10-straight points.
 
During Campbellsville 10-0 run, the Hilltoppers missed seven-straight shots and Coleby ended the Tiger run with a basket in paint.
 
The basket from Coleby sparked a WKU 13-0 run that held Campbellsville without a basket for 4:07. Hagen Tyler snapped the Tiger drought with his first basket of the game, which made it a 32-20 ball game in favor of the Hilltoppers.
 
After seven-straight points from the Tigers, WKU strung together another run to close out half. The Hilltoppers scored the final 16 points of the first half over the last 4:32 to take a 48-24 lead into the locker room.
 
Campbellsville went scoreless for for the final 5:01 of the first half and missed its last seven shots. All 24 points from the Tigers in the first half came from the starting five with Colman tallying nine of the teams 24 points.
 
The Hilltoppers were scorching from the floor in the first 20 minutes of play shooting 56.4 percent, but they missed all six three pointers they took. Campbellsville was 10-for-30 from the floor and 3-of-15 from beyond the arc.
 
Johnson scored the Tigers first basket in 6:06 of game time after the two teams traded buckets to open the second half. WKU stretched its lead to from the get going in the second half as it took a 24-point halftime lead and grabbed a 63-27 lead at the first media timeout in the second half.
 
The Tigers shooting struggles continued at the start of the second half as they made just two of their first 15 field goals in the first 10 minutes of action. In just over 15 minutes of game time, Campbellsville had two field goals on 22 shot attempts.
 
The Hilltoppers stretched its lead to as many as 47 points with 4:14 left to play in regulation. The Tigers only made nine baskets in the second half with five coming from beyond the arc.
 
In the second half, Campbellsville made just nine of its 32 shots from the floor. Half of the Tigers shots throughout the game came from beyond the arc. WKU finished the game shooting 52 percent from the floor.
 
Andrew Smith and Kel Livers were the only bench players to record points for the Tigers with the two combining for five points.
 
Campbellsville's 23 turnovers on Wednesday night was its most in a game since Nov. 9, 2013 when it turned the ball over 24 times against Concordia University-Irvine. The Tigers turned the ball over 24 times in back-to-back games to start the 2013 regular season and had 24 turnovers on Nov. 8 against Vanguard University.
 
Over the first two exhibition games for WKU it has compiled 27 steals, while not having more nine in a game last season.
 
The Tigers start their 2017-18 regular season schedule next Thursday at the Mid-South Conference/Southern States Athletic Conference Challenge in Georgetown, Ky. Campbellsville faces No. 25 Martin Methodist College on Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. ET.
