GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Campbellsville men's basketball had five Tigers score in double-figures and the bench pitched in 24 points to down Martin Methodist College in the season-opener, 84-67.
The Tigers improve to 1-0 on the season after winning the opening game of the Mid-South Conference/Southern States Challenge at Georgetown College.
Hagen Tyler drilled a trio of 3-pointers and finished hitting 7-of-14 overall to lead Campbellsville with 17 points. Andrew Smith and
Shawn Johnson both came off the bench and pitched in 15 point a piece, while
Jalen Coates scored also 12 from the bench and Tim Coleman had 11.
Smith and Johnson also added eight rebounds along with senior Adam Stanford.
Martin Methodist (3-of-58) finished with only one less basket but the Tigers (31-of-71) but the difference was the free throw shooting as CU hit 16-of-25 but Martin Methodist was only 4-of-10. The Tigers also out-rebounded MMC 40-31 and used 12 offensive boards to score 12 second chance points.
Coleman started the scoring for CU with an opening 3 and the Tigers never trailed the rest of the way. Campbellsville came out hitting on all cylinders by tripling the RedHawks score in the first five minutes, 15-5, and never let up.
Campbellsville went almost three minutes without a basket and Martin Methodist tried to make a game of it by ending the first half on a 16-7 run. The RedHawks cut the halftime deficit to 11 points, 48-37.
The second half was just like the end of the first but the roles were flipped. Martin Methodist went three minutes without a point and the Tigers were able to push their lead to 19 points, 60-41 with 14:42 left.
The lead never got below 15 points the rest of the way.
Martin Methodist's Jameero Spain led all scorers with 29 points on 12-of-17 shooting and led the RedHawks with six rebounds.
Campbellsville will now have 24 hours to prepare for its second game in the Conference Challenge as the Tigers play Brewton-Parker College at 4 p.m. ET on Friday afternoon. Coverage starts on 88.7 The Tiger with
