GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Campbellsville men's basketball forced 17 Brewton-Parker College turnovers en route to its second straight win to open the 2017-18 season, 79-66.
The Tigers start the year 2-0 after defeating the Barons tonight and Martin Methodist on Thursday night. The Mid-South Conference has started the conference challenge with a perfect 4-0 record on the men's side with University of Pikeville and Georgetown College still yet to play tonight.
CU once again had five players in double-figures while
Hagen Tyler dropped 13 points on 4-of-12 shooting. Tim Coleman added 12 points and hit three 3-point baskets but the Tigers struggled from deep with only seven makes and shooting 27 percent.
Adam Stanford recorded his first double-double with 10 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
The Barons had three players in double-figures with Dimychael Ross leading the way with 22. Leondre Christie added 20 points.
Brewton-Parker took its largest lead of the game, 17-10, after Myles White buried one of the eight 3-pointers for the Barons with 13:02 left in the opening half but the Tigers started to rally. Andrew Smith, Tim Coleman and
Hagen Tyler all scored buckets to put CU to a 20-20 tie and later
Shawn Johnson tied it up by hitting a pair of free throws, 22-22 with 7:55 left.
The Tigers then went on a 9-2 run to lead 31-24 with 3:25 left but Brewton-Parker wouldn't go away late in the first half. The Barons rallied with a 7-0 run trying the game at 31-all but Dominique Harding returned to the lineup after missing the past two years to hit two free throws and Tyler drilled a bucket with 21 seconds left giving CU a 35-31 lead.
In the second half, CU started quick and jumped out its largest lead of 13 points just four minutes in. CU started the half on a 13-4 run and led 48-35 after Coleman drilled one of his three triples.
The favorable margin stayed intact until CU took its largest advantage of 15 points with 4:45 left after
Jalen Coates picked up a steal and found Adam Stanford for a fast break layup.
The Tigers hit only 38 percent (27-of-71) from the floor but for the second straight night held the advantage at the free throw line by hitting 18-of-23 (78 percent).
Campbellsville will now play Bethel University on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET. Unfortunately, a radio broadcast will not be available due to the football team playing for a Mid-South Conference regular season championship at Lindsey Wilson.
