Gregory sparks Lady Tigers, as CU uses 18-0 run in second quarter to down Martin Methodist

McKENZIE, Tenn. — Lady Tiger basketball used an 18-0 run in the second quarter to go ahead by 21 points and Martin Methodist was never able to recover, as No. 6 Campbellsville won 78-53.

The Lady Tigers improve to 2-0 on the year after a pair of 25-point victories over the RedHawks and Blue Mountain College in the first two games of the Mid-South Conference/ Southern States Athletic Conference Challenge. The MSC improved to a perfect 4-0 after the Lady Tiger victory with UPIKE and No. 5 Shawnee State playing a pair of games tonight vs. Blue Mountain and No. 11 Bethel University.

Madison Clements once again led CU tonight with 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting, while Madison Stewart pitched in 14 points on 5-of-6 from the floor. Stewart also led the Lady Tigers on the boards with six rebounds.

Redshirt freshman Savannah Gregory scored a career-high 11 points – all in the first half – after splashing nine first quarter points.

Gregory sparked CU in the first quarter after coach Ginger Colvin pulled her started with a few minutes off the clock. Colvin went to her second group and Gregory gave the Lady Tigers the offensive and defensive production they were looking for. She finished the day hitting 5-of-7 from the floor, including her first Edward Jones 3-point basket, in 19 minutes of play.

With CU leading 26-23 after the opening frame, the first team came back in to start the quarter and went on an 18-0 run. The Lady Tigers held the RedHawks scoreless until the 2:35 mark in the frame and ended up taking their largest lead of to that point of 21 points, 44-23, after Dylana Fothergill scored one of her seven points.

Martin Methodist was able to go on an 8-2 run to end the half and cut the deficit to 15 points, 46-31.

In the third quarter, CU pushed its lead to 51-35 after Clements made one of her two triples with 6:37 left but the RedHawks once again make a little run. MMC scored five straight points and went on a 6-1 run cutting CU's lead to 11, 52-41, but CU put an end to that really quick.

In the final 3:14, the Lady Tigers were able to extend their lead by to 15 points with an 7-3 run, 59-44. The run was sparked by a Jordan Doram old fashioned 3-point play and Stewart grabbing an offensive board and put-back and hitting a pair of free throws.

Doram finished the night with 10 points for CU.

In the fourth quarter it was all Campbellsville. The Lady Tigers out-scored Martin Methodist 19-9 and were able to take their largest lead of the game with 1:33 left after Fothergill nailed two free throws.

The Lady Tigers once again used their defense and turn it into offense by forcing 25 turnovers and scoring 32 points off those MMC mishaps. CU also out-scored Martin Methodist's bench (38-16) and in the paint (55-19).

The RedHawks were led by Jemia Carpenter's 16 points but guard Brooklyn Blanchard struggled for the second straight game by hitting 3-of-14 from the floor and scoring six points.

Campbellsville will now play Bethel University tomorrow in the finale of The Challenge at 7 p.m. ET. Unfortunately a radio broadcast will not be available due to the football team playing for a Mid-South Conference regular season championship at Lindsey Wilson.
