McKENZIE, Tenn. — For the second time in three games, No. 6 Campbellsville women's basketball used a big second quarter to out-last an opponent. Tonight it was running by No. 11 Bethel University in the finale of the Mid-South Conference / Southern States Athletic Conference Challenge, 72-61.
For the third straight game, senior guard
Madison Clements led Campbellsville (3-0) with a season-high 21 points and hit four Edward Jones 3-point baskets. Redshirt freshman
Savannah Gregory had a stellar weekend in her first games since playing for Allen-Co. Scottsville in 2015-16. Gregory scored 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting to average 9.3 per contest this weekend.
Overall, the Lady Tigers hit a season-high seven 3-point baskets. The biggest improvement tonight was the free throw shooting, as CU hit a season-high 88 percent (15-of-17) from the charity stripe.
For the second time in three games, Campbellsville's twilight zone defense forced 30-plus turnovers. Bethel turned the ball over 32 times and CU earned 19 steals.
Campbellsville and Bethel were tied at 11 after the first quarter of play but it was the second quarter that gave the Lady Tigers the advantage it would need to hold off the Wildcats.
CU used an 18-4 run to out-score Bethel 30-16 in the second quarter and led 41-27 at halftime.
The Lady Tigers were able to push their lead back to as large as 16 points after
Jordan Doram scored the first basket of the second half but the Wildcats wouldn't go down without a fight.
CU kept the double digit lead until Jasmine Whittemore drilled a 3-pointer with 2:37 left in the third and cut the deficit to eight, 49-41. After a
Lauren Turner score, Whittemore suck another triple cutting the lead to seven, 51-44.
Madison Stewart and Clements teamed up to score the final three points and push CU's lead back to 10, 54-44, at the end of the third.
In the fourth quarter, CU didn't score for a little over two minutes, from the 4:55 mark until the 2:51 mark, and Bethel was able to cut the lead back to single digits with a 7-0 run, 64-55.
The Wildcats would then extend their run to 11-2 and cut the Lady Tiger lead to seven, 66-59, with 1:46 left. That's when the Lady Tigers finished strong. Clements made a basket,
Dylana Fothergill sank two free throws and was followed with two more by Gregory to seal the weekend sweep over the Southern States Athletic Conference.
Laurhen Pickett led Bethel with 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting, while Whittemore finished with 12 points - all off 3-point baskets by hitting four.
Campbellsville will now return home for the first game in the Powell Athletic Center. CU will host Talladega College on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. ET. Coverage on 88.7 The Tiger with
