COLUMBIA, Ky. – Campbellsville's football team scored twice in its first four plays, but No. 4 Lindsey Wilson College defeated the 18th-ranked Tigers, 49-28, on Saturday at Blue Raider Stadium in the final game of the regular season.
Hunter Brown finished the game with 370 yards passing and completed 27-of-45 passes to go along with a pair of touchdowns.
Kendon Young caught six passes for 153 yards and both of the Tigers' (7-2, 4-2 Mid-South Conference Bluegrass Division) receiving touchdowns.
Wade Holtsclaw rushed for 69 yards – 66 came on his touchdown run – on seven touches.
Garland Webb anchored the Campbellsville defense recording a game-high 10 total tackles against the Blue Raiders (10-0, 6-0 MSC Bluegrass).
Campbellsville got off to the fast start as Brown hit Young on a screen pass out into the flat and Young took it 77 yards to the house on the first play from scrimmage to put the Tigers ahead 7-0 just 18 seconds in the game.
After Campbellsville used just 18 seconds on their first drive, the Blue Raiders notched a 17-play 77-yard drive that chewed up 5:34 on the clock. Lindsey Wilson converted three fourth downs on the drive and Dylan Beasley hit Charles Gaines from 14 yards out to tie the game.
Big plays continued to fuel the Tigers with Holtsclaw taking his first touch – third play on the drive, fourth of the game – 66 yards for a touchdown. Campbellsville scored its first 14 points of the game, while holding the ball for just 1:23.
The shootout continued as the teams traded touchdown drives over the first four drives of the game. The Blue Raiders had a 76-yard drive last seven plays and Beasley recorded his second touchdown pass of the game.
Lindsey Wilson's defense picked up the first stop of the game on Campbellsville's third drive of the afternoon. The Blue Raiders forced the Tigers into a three-and-out and Lindsey Wilson earned a short field after a 12-yard punt. With the short field, Lindsey Wilson cashed in and took its first lead of the game at 21-14 after the first quarter.
The Blue Raiders scored 21-straight points to run its lead to 14 points. Lindsey Wilson started to take over the game as it scored a touchdown on its first four drives of the game, while Campbellsville was held to three-straight three-and-outs and gaining just five yards over those three drives.
The Tigers earned its first defensive stop on the Blue Raiders fifth drive of the game. Campbellsville's offense could not take advantage of the defensive stop after it was held without a first down for the fourth-straight possession.
Lindsey Wilson's offense got back on track as Beasley tossed his fourth touchdown of the game and giving the Blue Raiders a 35-14 lead.
After 14 plays without a first down, Brown ended the spell with a 10-yard pass to
Keanu Young. Neither team tacked on a score late in the first half, as Lindsey Wilson held a 35-14 advantage over the Tigers.
The Blue Raiders got off to the fast start in the second half after Blake Ingleton returned the opening kickoff of the second half 87 yards for a touchdown.
Campbellsville ended the 35-0 run for Lindsey Wilson after
Luckandre Vassor recovered a fumble and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown. The Tigers notched its first score since the 7:59 mark in the first period.
On the ensuing drive, the Blue Raiders had another short field after back-to-back penalties from Campbellsville. Lindsey Wilson went 47 yards in four plays and Beasley tossed his fifth touchdown of the game to give the Blue Raiders a 49-21 lead.
The Tigers strung together back-to-back drives that went deep into Blue Raider territory, but the Lindsey Wilson defense forced a turnover on downs at its 26-yard line and then intercepted a pass from Brown at the goal to keep the Tiger offense off the board.
Campbellsville's offense was held without points over 10-straight drives until Brown found
Kendon Young on the Tigers' final drive of the game to cut the Lindsey Wilson deficit to 49-28.
The Blue Raiders ran out the final 1:39 of the game and defeated Campbellsville, 49-28, to retain the Battle of Highway 55 title.
This marks the first time in series history that the winner of the turnover battle has lost the game.
Campbellsville concludes its regular-season schedule with a record of 7-2 overall and it finishes third in the first season in the MSC Bluegrass Division after going 4-2 in the division.
