CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Sixth-ranked Campbellsville used a 30-6 run in the third and fourth quarters to outpace No. 25 Talladega in the home opener at Powell Athletic Center on Tuesday night, 91-58.
Campbellsville (4-0) extends its winning streak over the Tornadoes (6-2) to five games after hitting 56 percent (34-of-61) from the floor and 43 percent (6-of-14) from 3-point land.
Junior
Madison Stewart scored 14 points to lead Campbellsville, while freshman Shyla Calbert scored a career-high 11 in 10 minutes of action off the bench.
On the 34 baskets by CU, 24 of those came off an assist as Clements and Stewart both finished with four, while
Caitlin Hall and
Madison Kaiser had three.
The Lady Tigers and Tornadoes were neck-and-neck in the first quarter with CU leading 15-12 after
Savannah Gregory buried her first 3 of the night. It was the second quarter that was the difference maker though.
Talladega tied the game at 23-all with 4:01 left in the frame but Campbellsville finished the half on a 11-0 run and held the Tornadoes in check. Talladega ended the half 0-for-4 from the floor and turned the ball over five times. On the flip side, CU went 5-of-6 from the floor in the final 4:01.
The run didn't stop there, though. Out of the halftime intermission, CU held the Tornadoes scoreless the first two minutes and allowed only four points until the 3:33 mark in the frame. By that point, the Lady Tigers went on their 30-6 run and were ahead by 24 points.
CU went ahead by 30 points for the first time with 7:09 remaining on the clock as senior
Lexxus Graham nailed one of her two 3s. The Lady Tigers pushed their lead to as large as 37 points a couple times after
Caitlin Hall buried her first 3 and
Madison Faulkner pitched in two of her nine points.
Campbellsville hit 43 percent from 3-point land and held Talladega to nine percent (1-of-11). CU also held the Tornadoes to 38 percent shooting (21-of-55) pointers.
The Lady Tigers will now hit the road for a five-game road swing. CU travels to Pikeville, Ky. to play West Virginia Tech University on Friday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. ET and Central Methodist University on Saturday at 12 p.m. Unfortunately, radio coverage will not be available for either game.
