JACKSON, Tenn. — Sixth-ranked Lady Tiger basketball went frigid cold from the floor in the final 6:44 of the fourth quarter and could not complete a comeback over No. 3 Freed-Hardeman University falling, 56-49.
With 6:44 left,
Lexxus Graham picked up a steal and found
Savannah Gregory for a fast break layup cutting the Freed-Hardeman lead to two, 44-42. But that was the final field goal for Campbellsville until
Jordan Doram scored with 12 seconds remaining.
Freed-Hardeman (6-1) finished the game by doubling-up the Lady Tigers with a 14-7 run.
Gregory paced Campbellsville (7-1) with 14 points and recorded a new career-high with nine rebounds. Carrie Hatchel led the Lady Lions with 13 points, while Kim Mallory was held to six points but grabbed a game-high 10 boards.
It was a hot and cold start for the Lady Tigers and Lady Lions. CU started like a rocket out of a cannon with a 9-0 run.
Madison Clements hit a couple jumpers, Gregory buried a 3 and
Lauren Turner scored on a fast break to force Hall of Fame coach Dale Neal to call a quick timeout just 2-plus minutes into the game.
After the timeout, Campbellsville was able to push its lead to 11-2 and held Freed-Hardeman without a field goal until the 1:32 mark when Sandrea Sylman cut the deficit to 11-6.
Sylman finished the first half with only four points - the field goal and a pair of free throws. She only scored two in the second half and finished with six overall after coming in averaging 20.3 per contest.
The Lady Lions answered right back in the second quarter and out-scored CU, 15-9. Freed-Hardeman nailed back-to-back 3s to cut the deficit to two, 15-13, and then tied the game at 15 with a basket by Haylee Crum.
Lauren Turner gave the Lady Tigers a 17-15 lead but Jamie Crum drilled a 3-pointer putting the Lady Lions ahead, 18-17.
Senior
Lexxus Graham scored five straight points for CU to give the Lady Tigers a 22-18 lead but FHU finished the half on a 4-0 run in the final 50 seconds.
The 22 points was the lowest scored in the first half for both teams.
The third quarter was all Freed-Hardeman. Like CU's big run to start the game, the Lady Lions started similar in the second half. FHU started the half on a 12-0 run while Campbellsville was 1-of-6 from the floor to start the third stanza.
Clements finally put CU on the board in the quarter at the 4:59 mark for her eighth and final point of the night.
Freed-Hardeman pushed its lead to 11, 34-23, but Gregory once again sparked CU with eight straight points. She capitalized with an old-fashioned 3-point play - which turned out to be the first free throw attempt CU had all day. On the next possession, Gregory hit another layup cutting the Lady Lions lead to five, 34-29. After a bucket by Freed-Hardeman pushing the lead to 36-29, Gregory splashed a 19-foot jumper to score eight straight points.
A few minutes later
Madison Stewart hit two free throws cutting the lead to four with 42 seconds left in the frame, 39-35, but that was all she could muster today and finished 0-of-11 from the floor.
Graham scored her seventh point cutting the lead to two at the end of the third quarter, 39-37.
The Lady Tigers would have needed to come from behind for the first time this year in the final quarter but Campbellsville could went cold the final 6:44.
CU finished hitting 36 percent (19-of-53), while Freed-Hardeman hit 35 percent (19-of-54). The difference was the Lady Lions hit nine 3-point baskets and CU hit only 2-of-12 (16%). FHU also out-rebounded Campbellsville 30-12 and scored 18 second chance points.
CU did turn the Lady Lions over 20 times and scored 25 points off those mishaps.
