CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — On a night to honor the two Lady Tiger seniors, No. 24 Campbellsville ended the regular season with a 3-1 victory over Indiana University Southeast on Monday night, 25-19, 25-17, 23-25, 25-15.
Seniors
Annija Abolina and
Marcella Compeau were both crucial in CU's final regular season match. Abolina led CU with 15 kills, while Compeau registered a match-high 23 digs to lead the defense.
In addition,
Katie Johnson and
Maria Coelho had 10 kills apiece.
Campbellsville finished the regular season with a 24-7 record, while IU Southeast drops to 17-19 overall.
It took a few points for Campbellsville to settle in but once it did, the Lady Tigers put the pedal to the floor.
IU Southeast rallied to take a 14-11 lead but the Lady Tigers went on a quick 9-5 run and led 20-17 forcing a Grenadier timeout. But that wouldn't stop CU's momentum, finishing the set on a 14-8 run and winning 25-19.
Abolina led CU in the first set with four of the nine kills but it was the height of Campbellsville at the front line giving IU Southeast fits. The Lady Tigers recorded nine blocks – three solo and five block assists – to control the net.
Just like the first, set No. 2 was back-and-fourth until Campbellsville took control with another big run. This time with CU leading 10-6, IU Southeast went on a mini 5-3 run forcing coach
Amy Zink to call a timeout. The Lady Tigers answered her call and went on an 8-4 run to lead 21-15 and ended the set by winning 25-17.
Campbellsville finished with 15 kills in the second set and only four errors to hit a set-high .344.
CU was "this close" from sweeping the Grenadiers to end the regular season but were unable to overcome a slow start to the set.
Trailing 7-3, CU was able to rally with an 8-4 run and knot the set at 11-all. Then it was IU Southeast regaining control with an 18-13 lead before the Lady Tigers came right back and pulled within one point twice (20-19 and 24-23).
In the final set, it was the service ace that sparked Campbellsville. Leading 10-6, Abolina registered two aces and IU Southeast fell victim to a pair of attacking errors to lead 14-7.
Overall, Campbellsville finished the night with 10 aces.
CU cruised the rest of the way to win 25-15.
The Lady Tigers will now have a few days to prepare for the Mid-South Conference Tournament at South Warren High School in Bowling Green, Ky. CU earned the three-seed with a 10-4 MSC record and will play sixth-seeded Cumberland University on Thursday at 6 p.m. ET.
