Offense sputters as Men’s Soccer falls to Cumberland in semifinals of MSC Tournament, 2-0

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Campbellsville men's soccer team struggled to generate offensive chances in a 2-0 loss to Cumberland University in the Mid-South Conference Championship Semifinals on Thursday afternoon at Warren Central High School.

The Tigers (13-3-1) compiled just seven total shots in the game and two on goal. Daniel Williams scored both of the goals for the Phoenix (14-2-2).

After Yudai Yamauchi tallied the first shot of the game in the sixth minute, Cumberland countered four minutes later as Williams tallied his first goal of the game in the 10th minute. Daniel Nimmo misplayed a ball on the back line and Williams beat Nimmo to the loose ball. After gaining possession, Williams raced down the left side of the goal box and beat Andreas Nota to the far post to put the Phoenix on top 1-0.

The Tigers continued to try and press forward, but their chances on goal struggled to find the target. Cameron Badenhorst and Mark Callaghan recorded the only two shots on goal for Campbellsville.

In the 40th minute, Williams struck for the second time in the first half. He collected the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and curled the ball up in to the top-left corner of the goal to push the Cumberland lead to 2-0 heading into the locker room.

The Phoenix came out on the front foot to start the second half and controlled the majority of the possession down the stretch. Campbellsville only three shots in the second half with none of the shots reaching goal.

Cumberland put together a couple scoring opportunities, but Nota came up with a pair of big saves for the Tigers.

A late chance arose for Campbellsville with a near own goal from the Phoenix. The Tigers tried to find a late spark with under three minutes with a pair of corner kicks, but Campbellsville could not find the back of the net.

Nota ended the day with four saves, but Campbellsville could not generate a goal as it was shutout for the second time this season in a 2-0 loss to the Phoenix.

The Tigers now wait to see if they earn an at-large bid into the NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship, which will be announced on Monday, Nov. 13.
