KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Five-set matches haven't gone in Campbellsville's favor this year but the Lady Tigers overcame adversity tonight to win its third five-setter of the year over Southwestern Assemblies of God (SAGU), 25-17, 25-23, 14-25, 20-25, 15-9.
Campbellsville improves to 30-9 on the year and 4-0 in NCCAA Championship Pool Play. The 30-win season in the third in coach
Amy Zink's tenure and the perfect record in pool play joins top-seeded Biola as the lone teams with 4-0 slates.
The Lady Tigers will now play in the NCCAA Championship match for the second straight year and is seeking its second NCCAA banner after winning Campbellsville's first-ever team title in 2009.
SAGU ventured into its final pool play game after getting down 2-0 to Oakland City earlier in the day. But the Lions rallied to win in five sets over the Mighty Oaks. It looked as if SAGU would rewrite their own script tonight and do it all again but the Lady Tigers held serve in the final set and snatched the momentum right back from the Lions.
In the opening set, SAGU knotted the match at 15-all but the Lady Tigers finished the set on a 10-2 run.
Maria Coelho and
Katie Johnson both finished with four first-set kills and CU had five blocks.
But Coelho and Johnson cooled off and the Lions started to find holes in Lady Tiger front line.
Set No. 2 also went to Campbellsville but this time the Lady Tigers had to rally late. After getting down 20-17, CU went on another late run (8-3) to seal the set and take a 2-0 match lead.
Then the Lady Tigers awoke the Lions. SAGU controlled the third set by hitting .294 compared to Campbellsville's .050 hitting percentage. The Lions doubled-up Campbellsville, 14-7, and later pushed its lead to 17-10 before winning 25-14.
The third set was CU's lowest offensive output of the NCCAA Championship thus far, hitting .095.
The fourth set was a nail-bitter. Leading 12-10, SAGU went on a 5-1 run to take control and lead 17-11. Coach Zink called a timeout and CU once again answered the call and didn't give up. CU rallied with a 6-2 run and cut the deficit to as little as one, 20-19, but SAGU finished the set on a 5-1 run itself to knot the match at two-all.
The Lions had a big momentum boost after coming back from two sets to none but fatigue and frustration started to set in. Campbellsville dominated the final set and hit .333 compared to .000 for SAGU. The Lady Tigers recorded eight kills and only two errors compared to five and five for the Lions.
Annija Abolina led CU with 14 kills, while Johnson finished 12, Coelho had 11 and
Julia Fonseca had 10.
Maliyah Tela finished with 44 assists, while
Marcella Compeau had 20 digs to lead CU.
With the victory, Campbellsville will now play Emmanuel College in the NCCAA Championship semifinal. First serve goes up at 12 p.m. ET at the Kissimmee Civic Center. In the second semifinal bout, top-seeded Biola will play SAGU at 10 a.m. ET. The championship match is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET between the two winners.
