COLUMBIA, Ky. — No. 21 Tiger basketball improved its win streak to nine games for the first time since 2014-15 after defeating Toccoa Falls College on Saturday afternoon in the Biggers Sports Center, 110-64.
Campbellsville improved its record to 13-1 – also the first time since 2014-15 – and will now have 12 days before lacing up the sneakers in the University of the Cumberlands Classic after Christmas.
The Tigers 100-plus points is also the fifth time CU has surpassed the century mark this season, while Toccoa Falls has allowed 100-plus in nine of its 10 games.
Tim Coleman led the Tigers with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while also hitting five 3-point baskets and dishing out four assists. He was followed by
Andrew Smith's 17 and
Hagen Tyler's 15. Smith started the game with 12 quick points in the first four minutes but only scored five the rest of the way. Tyler had only two points in the first half but scored 13 in the second 20-minutes, while hitting three 3-point baskets.
Deion Evans scored 14 points off the bench and grabbed eight rebounds, while
Jalen Coates dished out a game-high eight assists.
CU started on fire and led 23-4 after just 4:44 off the clock. In that span, Smith scored all 12 of his first-half points but Coach
Brent Vernon stuck to his game plan of subbing in five players at a time and Toccoa Falls wouldn't allow the game to get out of hand early.
The Screaming Eagles went on a 7-3 run and cut the deficit to 14 points, 25-11, with 13:55 left in the opening half.
Taylor Howard then drilled his first 3-point basket and then he found
Deion Evans for two of his 14 points to push CU back ahead by 19, 30-11.
The lead grew to as large as 21 points on a couple occasions – the last after Howard found
Jacob King for a 3-pointer with 2:26 left in the half.
After scoring only 36 points in last night's entire game versus Lindsey Wilson, the Screaming Eagles put up 34 in the first half today and trailed, 53-34.
The second half was a different story, though. Campbellsville started to use its defense and turned it into offense. CU forced 19 turnovers and scored 25 points off those miscues.
After Toccoa Falls cut the deficit to 19, 60-41, the Tigers went on a 14-0 run to put the game out of hand. In that span, Tyler buried a couple 3s, Smith and King both scored buckets, while Coleman capped it with one of his game-high five 3s.
The Tigers pushed their lead to 40 with 6:21 left and took their largest lead of 49 points after
Deion Evans sealed the victory with a breakaway dunk with 10 seconds left.
The Tigers will now have 12 days in between games as they will return to the court after Christmas. CU will play in the University of the Cumberlands Classic on Dec. 29-30 vs. NAIA DII programs, Stillman College and Kentucky Christian University. Both games will be aired on the CU Sports Network.
