NEWARK, Del. — As part of the Beast of the East, the National Wrestling Coaches Association invited four college programs to kickoff the 25th anniversary event in style. Campbellsville University joined Ohio State University's men's program in earning a pair of dual wins on Friday night.
No. 2 Campbellsville defeated No. 10 University of the Cumberlands, 35-11, while No. 2 Ohio State swept Princeton University, 39-0.
"This event was first class," said coach
Lee Miracle. "Vic Leonard and the rest of the Beast of the East staff rolled the red carpet out for the four college teams involved.
"The team did a great job of remaining focused on getting the job done. I saw some things that I really liked in our wrestling. I also saw some things that we need to work on before National Duals. The Cumberlands' coaches did a nice job preparing for us. It might not look like It from the dual score but, there were some matches that we ended up getting fortunate and getting a pin which essentially erased great efforts of some of the Cumberlands' athletes."
Campbellsville, which improves its duals record to a perfect 11-0, only dropped a pair of matches and one of those was via forfeit.
Cumberlands' Rebecca Forsyth earned that forfeit victory at 101 lbs. but that kick-started eight straight wins for Campbellsville.
At 109 lbs.,
Charlotte Fowler picked up a 7-6 win over Jessica Rodriguez and at 116 lbs.
McKayla Campbell earned a tech fall over Madison Angelito, 17-6, in 3:56.
With those two victories, the Lady Tigers took a 7-5 lead in the dual and never looked back. At 123 lbs.,
Steffanie Hampton pinned Kellyann Jimenez in 4:53, while
Shelby Hall earned a 6-1 decision over Ismilena Valles at 130.
Kayla Miracle and
Alexia Foca wasted little time with first period falls. Miracle, wrestling at 136, pinned Sidney Salinas in 1:43, while Foca, wrestling at 143, took down Bridgette Duty in 0:59.
Morgan Becker and
Mariah Harris rounded out the Lady Tigers at 155 and 170, respectively. Becker earned a 10-0 tech fall in 3:09 over Kailee Godinez, while Harris earned a second period pin over Anna Naylor in 3:29.
At 191, Cumberlands' Courteney Tompkins defeated
Kaitlyn Hill for only the Patriots second match-win in the dual.
"I continue to be impressed with our younger girls," mentioned Miracle. "They compete hard! Campbell, Foca, Harris, Fowler, and Becker are getting better every outing. When you couple that with the leadership and experience of the seniors like Miracle. Hall, Hampton, and Hill, you have the makings of a tough team. I'm excited for the National Duals. I think our girls are too."
