WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Campbellsville won the inaugural Mid-South Conference Tournament title after compiling 192 total points and the Lady Tigers swept the regular season and tournament titles during the first year the MSC sponsored women's wrestling.
Charlotte Fowler,
Koral Sugiyama,
Alexia Foca and
Kaitlyn Hill won their individual weight classes to lead Campbellsville to the conference title.
The Lady Tigers controlled the 109-pound weight class with Fowler earning a pair of 10-0 technical falls over Brewton-Parker College's Brooke Richards and Alanda Nguyen of Life University to move on the finals.
Katlyn Pizzo pinned her first two opponents in the first period of her two matches and moved on to the final to set up an all Lady Tiger final bout. However, Pizzo injury defaulted and Fowler won the weight class, while Pizzo finished second.
Needing just one victory to get to the finals at 116 pounds, Makayla Campbell earned a 12-0 technical fall over Life's Tyesha Topps in the semifinals, but lost in the final match to Jennifer Juarez of Life, 12-0.
With not having any competitors at 101 pounds and 170 pounds, Campbellsville had a grappler compete in finals of each remaining weight class.
At 123 pounds,
Steffanie Hampton earned a bye into the semifinals and then took on University of the Cumberlands' Sidney Salinas, where Hampton earned a 10-0 technical fall. In the championship bout, Hampton dropped a 10-4 decision to Kelly-Ann Jimenez of Cumberlands.
Shelby Hall rolled into the finals at 130 pounds with a pin of Cumberlands' Samantha Crocker and the defeated Kayla Weed of Brewton-Parker with an 11-0 technical fall. Hall suffered her first loss of the day in a tight 4-3 decision against Cumberlands' Ismileyna Valles.
In the 136-pound weight class, Sugiyama first pinned Ashley Ikner of Cumberlands and then wrestled to a 15-15 draw with Bridgette Duty of the Patriots. However, Sugiyama was ruled the winner of the championship bout after winning by criteria.
Foca went 3-0 en route to capturing the title at 143 pounds winning with a technical fall and a pair of decisions. She started her day with a 10-0 technical fall over Esmeralda Garcia of Cumberlands and then beat Brewton-Parker's Mikayla Miles in an 11-6 decision to advance to the finals. Foca outlasted Life's Zoe Wight in the championship match in a 10-7 decision.
Sophia Carson also competed in the 143-pound bracket, where she won her opening match over Lindenwood University-Belleville's Maya Shimizu, 10-0. Carson just missed the championship after suffering a 6-4 setback to Wight. In the consolation bracket, Carson pinned Garcia just at the end of the first period to move into the third-place bout. Carson placed third in the bracket after earning a 12-2 technical fall over Miles.
Morgan Becker and
Courtney Gray represented Campbellsville at 155 pounds finishing second and third, respectively. Becker pinned her first opponent of the day to move on to the championship match. However, in the final, Niauni Hill of Lindenwood-Belleville edged Becker in a 6-1 decision.
Gray lost her opening match on Saturday to Niauni Hill in a 10-0 technical fall. After being shifted to the consolation bracket, Gray earned bye into the third-place bout and she pinned Life's Raven Thomas to win the match.
Rounding out the championship in the 191-pound weight division was
Kaitlyn Hill and
Raquel Valderrama.
Kaitlyn Hill pinned Life's Jaclyn Fields and then won a 10-0 contest over Kim Vargas to advance to the championship final. In a low scoring bout against Stephanie Pantoja of Life,
Kaitlyn Hill came away with a narrow 2-1 decision to win the weight class.
Valderrama started the day with a pin of Yalitxa Ramos of Lindenwood-Belleville, but she later dropped a 10-0 technical fall to Pantoja. In the consolation bracket, Valderrama pinned Cumberlands Shea Charles and then pinned Kim Vargas to place third overall.
The Lady Tigers had 12 individuals compete on Saturday with each wrestler finishing inside the top three of their respective weight classes.
All first-place finishers were named to the All Mid-South Conference First Team, while the second-place finisher made up the second team.
Campbellsville returns to action next weekend as its hosts the NAIA Invitational on Saturday.
