CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — History repeated itself to end regulation between Campbellsville University and the University of the Cumberlands on Thursday night but then even more history was made when the game ventured into five overtimes. The Patriots prevailed in the 5OT NAIA thriller, 116-115.
The 5OT contest is the longest game in Campbellsville history.
CU trailed by 10 points, 69-59, with 4:35 left in regulation but it wouldn't be a Cumberlands-Campbellsville rivalry game in the Powell Athletic Center without some fireworks late. CU had finished on top with a pair of thrilling victories the previous two seasons in the Powell – Eric Gaines' steal and slam dunk with 30 seconds remaining in 2015 and the Tigers erased a 23-point deficit last season to upset the Patriots.
Jalen Coates finished with a career-high 27 points, dished out 10 assists for his first double-double as a Tigers.
Erik Kinney was right behind him with career-high 24 points and 21 rebounds.
Elliott Young scored 23 and grabbed 11 rebounds and also surpassed 1,000 career points for his career in the second half.
Hagen Tyler, who played all 65 minutes, pitched in 22 points.
Chance Morton led the Patriots with a career-high 34 points and 15 rebounds. Marquis Yates also had a double-double with 10 and 12.
Tonight, it was
Jalen Coates taking over in the final 4:35 and CU taking advantage of Kelsley Wilkinson fouling out with 5:00 left. Coates scored five-straight points to cut the deficit to five.
Elliott Young, who surpassed 1,000 points tonight, hit a pair of free throws cutting the lead to three, 69-66. He was then followed with a basket by
Erik Kinney, cutting the UC lead to one, 69-68.
After an Eric Duncan free throw pushed the lead back to two, 70-68, Coates tied it at 70 with his seventh point in four-plus minutes with a floater in the lane.
After a Campbellsville timeout, Eddie Tornes missed a jumper to send the game into a first overtime period.
Like the regulation period, CU had to erase another Cumberlands' lead. The Patriots went up by four, 76-72, but Kinney cut the lead in half with a layup and Eric Duncan turned the ball over for UC with 52 clicks left. With 44 seconds left,
Elliott Young made a pair of free throws tying it at 76. But once again UC could not pull out the victory yet, as Marquis Yates missed a runner with time expiring.
The second OT was similar to the first. Cumberlands went on a 6-0 run and led 85-79 but CU answered by scoring seven of the final nine points to force a third OT.
The Tigers hadn't gone into a third OT since a 99-92 loss to then-St. Catharine College on Feb. 20, 2014. But tonight, CU made history by going into the fourth OT.
Cumberlands led by two, 94-92, with 39 seconds left but
Hagen Tyler was fouled driving to the basket and hit a pair of clutch free throws to tie it at 94. The Patriots had another opportunity to win but Travon Labrance missed with time expiring as well.
Once again in the fourth OT, Campbellsville had to erase another Cumberlands lead.
Erik Kinney followed a CU miss with a put-back slam cutting the deficit to two, 103-101. After a basket by Cumberlands,
Elliott Young buried another 3 and cut the lead to one, 105-104. In the next CU possession, Kinney made a free throw to tie the game and send it into a fifth OT.
In the final overtime, Campbellsville had a chance to win but
Hagen Tyler's shot missed and
Byron Dean fouled Bernard Samuel with time expiring. The officials called a foul right before the horn sounded and decided to put 0.4 seconds on the clock. Samuel missed the first double-bonus free throw but made the second for the victory, 116-115.
Cumberlands had four players that fouled out – Morton, Wilkinson, Yates and Duncan. Campbellsville had two – Kinney and Rod Lawrence. Lawrence fouled out with 8:00 left in regulation and CU did not sub until the third OT period.
Hagen Tyler played every minute, 65, while Kinney played 61 before fouling out in the final OT period.
The 26 made free throws for CU ties a season-high, as the Tigers made 26 twice before Thursday night.
Cumberlands has a day off on Saturday but Campbellsville will now host No. 14 University of Pikeville. The women's game starts at 2 p.m. ET and coverage of the doubleheader starts at 1:45 on the CU Sports Network.
