CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — The Tigers hit just 15-of-27 (56 percent) from the free throw line on Saturday and could not hang on to a late one-point lead, falling to No. 14 University of Pikeville, 71-65.
The Tigers trailed by nine points, 60-51, with 3:59 left but
Elliott Young buried consecutive 3-pointers and Rod Lawrence brought CU within one with a pair of free throws, 60-59, with 2:42 left.
Jordan Perry answered the quick 8-0 run by UPIKE with a 3 himself but
Jalen Coates brought the lead back to three with one of two free throws at the 2:10 mark.
Young, who was honored before the game for becoming the 30
th Tiger to surpass 1,000 points in a career, brought the Powell Athletic Center crowd back to its feet on the next CU possession. He tipped in a Rod Lawrence miss cutting the UPIKE lead to one, 63-62, and then
Zach Perry hit Young on a bounce pass to give the Tigers their first lead since the 6:23 mark in the first half (19-18 was the score).
But in the final minute, Campbellsville went cold and was forced to foul. Trey Rakes, a high school teammate of
Elliott Young, buried his lone 3 of the day to give the Bears the lead right back, 66-64.
Jalen Coates had a chance to tie the game right back but missed a pair of free throws and the Tigers had to foul Clint Nwosuh on the rebound. He knocked down two free throws pushing the lead to four, 68-64, with 25 seconds left.
Campbellsville advanced the ball and called a timeout with 22 clicks left but out of the break,
Hagen Tyler air-balled a deep 3 and the Tigers were unable to make a comeback.
UPIKE hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final 30 seconds to ice the game. The Bears countered CU's free throw shooting by hitting 14-of-19 (74%). The Tigers also didn't have an answer for Darion Leslie down low, as he paced the Bears with a career-high 32 points and game-high 10 rebounds. CU was also out-scored in the paint, 40-28.
Young led the Tigers with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting and 4-of-9 from 3-point land. Coates was close behind with 18 points and six rebounds but hit just 6-of-12 from the charity stripe.
Campbellsville drops below .500 for the first time this season with a 12-13 overall record and 2-9 inside Mid-South Conference play. UPIKE improved to 21-6 and 6-5 in the MSC. CU travels to Shawnee State University and No. 3 Georgetown College next week on Thursday and Saturday, respectively. Both games will be aired on the Campbellsville University Sports Network.
