Lady Tigers finish Day 1 of WCWA in third with eight All-Americans

OKLAHOMA CITY - Campbellsville completes the first day of the WCWA National Championship in third place and two Lady Tigers guaranteed their spot in the finals when competition resumes Saturday Night at Abe Lemons Arena.
 
Eight Lady Tigers were named WCWA All-Americans. Of those eight, three still have their national title hopes alive – Andribeth Rivera (123), Kayla Miracle (136) and Koral Sugiyama (136). Charlotte Fowler (109), Shelby Hall (130), Mariah Harris (155), Hanna Hall (170) and Jesse Grubbs (191) were the other Lady Tigers to receive All-American honors.
 
Campbellsville finished the day in third place with a total of 124 team points. Three-time reigning national champion King University leads the tournament with 167.5 points, followed by Simon Fraser University with 125.5 points. Wayland Baptist trails CU with 115.5 points and Menlo College rounds out the Top 5 with 102.5 points.
 
No. 1 Miracle led the way for CU with 23.50 team points at 136 pounds. She won both preliminary rounds by fall, first over Diana Nevarez of McKendree University, then over Kaylynn Hixenbaugh of Southwestern Oregon Community College. In the quarterfinal she defeated Gladdys Palma of Southern Oregon University by fall, advancing to semifinal where she won by tech fall over Solin Piearcy of Menlo College.
 
Entering the finals in second place for the 123-pound class, Rivera scored 21 points for Campbellsville through Day 1. Cheyenne Sims of Midland Lutheran College was defeated by tech fall in Round 1 and Delilah Houck of Warner Pacific College lost by fall in Round 2. Rivera advanced to the quarterfinal where she won by tech fall over Rachel Archer from Oklahoma City University, then the semifinal where she defeated Hanna Grisewood of King University by a thrilling 5-4 decision.
Rivera will face Dominique Parrish from Simon Fraser University in the final match for first-place.
 
Sugiyama followed in the 136-pound class with two preliminary wins by fall over Regina Bell of Warner Pacific College and by a 10-3 decision over Alyssa Batiste of Lyon University. In the quarterfinal Sugiyama defeated Fran Giorgio by fall, advancing to the semifinal. Due to an official protest in the second period of the semifinal, Sugiyama is subject to a rematch with Nicole Depa of Simon Fraser University to begin Saturday's competition.
 
Rounding out the double-digit scoring for the Lady Tigers, Shelby Hall collected 14.50 team points and is sixth, while Hannah Hall and Mariah Harris both finished in eighth with 11 and 10.5 points, respectively.
 
All-American competition will resume Saturday morning at 10 a.m., followed by finals at 5 p.m.
