Carbuccia's big weekend leads 14th-ranked Tigers to a series win at No. 24 Freed-Hardeman

HENDERSON, Tenn. — Romello Carbuccia delivered an RBI triple in the seventh inning of game one and Diego Reynoso smashed his first-career home run – a two run shot – in game two to seal the series win over No. 24 Freed-Hardeman University, 5-4 and 3-2.

Carbuccia was on fire in the first series of the year going 6-for-12 and driving in four runs, while scoring twice himself. Kirby Broadbent and Dillon Day eared their first wins of the season, while DJ Wilson and Ray Fernandez both tallied saves.

Campbellsville will now return home to host Midway University on Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 4 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on 88.7 The Tiger, the Tunein Radio App by searching WLCU and also on CampbellsvilleTigers.com.

Game one: Campbellsville 5, Freed-Hardeman 4

Matthew Valdez started the third-inning rally with a leadoff single and was followed by a fielders choice and another single Carbuccia. Logan Roberts ended up driving in his first CU runs with a two-run double to deep left-center field.

Campbellsville added a run in the fourth after Brett Hamilton led off with a single and was followed with a Shane Stober base knock and Valdez double down the left field line, 3-0.

Malik Evans started on the hill for CU but only lasted 3.1 innings. The Tigers were haunted by errors and walks all day, allowing three first-game walks and committing two errors. The Lions took advantage in the fourth inning after a hit by pitch and error put runners on first and second with zero outs. Aden Campbell singled to left to load the bases but Evans hunkered down when he needed with his fourth strikeout.

Coach Beauford Sanders then went to his bullpen, as Ray Fernandez replaced Evans on the hill. But Fernandez hit another batter to score a run and Darcy Moore singled in two more to tie the game at 3-all.

After walking another batter to load the bases right back, Fernandez stepped up with a strikeout but the Tigers brought in Roberts from the DH position to record the final out – another K.

Freed-Hardeman took their first lead of the day in the next inning without recording a hit. It all started with another hit by pitch. Chase Young reached and advanced to second on a passed ball. After a walk to Aden Campbell, Young stole third and then scored on another Stober passed ball. Roberts was able to get out of the game with his second strikeout and a line out to the shortstop.

The Tigers relied on Carbuccia in the last inning to come through. CU's rally started with a one-out walk to David Montoya before Carbuccia delivered a triple to deep center field. Roberts then followed suit with a double to score the game-winning run.

DJ Wilson entered in the bottom of the seventh and also had to work around a leadoff hit by pitch. But the Tigers defense stepped up and doubled off Chase Young at first base after a fly ball to right field to earn the victory and Wilson a save.

Game two: Campbellsville 3, Freed-Hardeman 2

Campbellsville jumped on the Lions first again as Reynoso delivered his first-career long ball. But Freed-Hardeman came right back and scratched a run in the second inning – after another leadoff walk.

Jhonbert Gonzalez walked Darcy Moore but was able to strike out a Parks Flowers. Gonzalez also struck out Alex Whitwell but Moore stole second base and advanced to third on an error by the pitcher Gonzalez. He later scored on a balk (all unearned).

Coach Sanders then went to another freshman pitcher, as Dillon Day replaced Gonzalez after only 1.2 innings. After a first-batter walk, Day calmed down to pick up the final out for CU.

Day (1-0) finished his first outing tossing 2.1 innings and did not allow a hit or run, while walking two and striking out a pair.

Moving to the sixth inning, the Tigers added an insurance run that turned into the game-winner. Valdez reached base on a hit by pitch and was moved to second on a sac bunt by David Montoya. That's when Carbuccia delivered once-game an RBI double to put CU ahead, 3-1.

CU went to Clayton Currico out of the bullpen in the eighth, but like twice before by the Tiger pitching staff, a leadoff walk came around to score. Currico was replaced by Ray Fernandez and he was able to pick up a pair of Ks, looking like he would get out of the inning unharmed. But an error by Jose Castro – the Tigers fourth of the game - led to the second Lions run.

After getting out of the eighth inning, Fernandez pitched the ninth as well and the Lions made it a little interesting late. Chase Young doubles but Fernandez closed it out for his first save as a Tiger.
