PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — The Tigers finished just below a season-high by hitting 57 percent from the floor to down Shawnee State University, 87-69.
In addition to hitting 35-of-61 overall, Campbellsville (13-13, 3-8 MSC) also hit 52 percent from the 3-point line (12-of-23).
The Tigers forced 19 turnovers and scored 26 points off those miscues. The Bears out-rebounded CU, though, 36-28.
Jalen Coates led the Tigers offensively with 21 points, while
Hagen Tyler finished with 19. Tyler made 5-of-7 3-point baskets and 7-of-10 overall, while Coates was 9-of-13 overall with a game-high five assists.
Elliott Young was also on fire to start the night and hit five 3-pointers – four in the first six minutes - and scored 17 points.
Erik Kinney led CU with eight rebounds.
Frederick Moore finished with a game-high 24 points for the Bears and recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds.
Campbellsville started out hot and didn't let up the entire game. The Tigers went ahead 11-0 and held Shawnee State without a basket for the first 2:30. Young got CU going, though, scoring the first basket – a 3 – and then hit three more to put CU ahead 22-6 with 14:02 left in the first half.
CU ended up pushing its lead to 19, 29-10 with 12:22 left, as Coates delivered one of his patented up-and-under contested layups with defenders all around him.
But Shawnee State did start to make a run. After a technical foul on Kinney, the Bears went on a 11-2 run and cut the deficit to 10, 33-23.
The Tigers ended up taking a 44-34 lead at halftime and hit 58 percent in the first half. Shawnee State was also shooting the ball well by knocking down 43 percent from 3 in the first half but couldn't match CU's 6-of-12 shooting from deep.
In the second half, CU started exactly how it did in the first — a
Jalen Coates driving layup and a triple by
Hagen Tyler. Shawnee State was able to hang around for a few minutes but could never get the Tiger below double-figures all night. Campbellsville then went on a 19-6 run and never looked back.
The rally was sparked by
Zach Perry miraculously banking in a corner 3 and Tyler followed suit with a step-back triple of his own to put CU ahead, 63-47.
Tyler then drilled another coming off a screen and hit one more for good measure on a fast break putting CU ahead, 77-58.
Jalen Coates then found
Erik Kinney with a no-look pass for a flush and Tyler sealed the game off a turnover by hitting his fifth 3 and giving CU a 82-58 advantage.
Campbellsville now heads to No. 3 Georgetown College on Saturday, Feb. 18. Tipoff for the women's-men's doubleheader starts at 2 p.m. and coverage starts on 88.7 The Tiger with
Jay Turner at 1:45.
