Tigers light up No. 6 Georgetown with 77-76 upset on the road

GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Campbellsville flipped an 11-point deficit at halftime and hit 64 percent from 3-point line in the second half to knock off No. 6 Georgetown College, 77-76.

Campbellsville (14-13, 4-9 MSC) entered by losing four of its last five games – all of them by eight points or less. The Tigers have also lost eight games by eight points or less this season and finally hung on to a late lead for a victory.

With the win for Campbellsville, and loss to Georgetown (21-5, 8-4), Life University claims the regular season title in the Mid-South Conference. CU welcomes the Running Eagles to the Powell Athletic Center for Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 25.

The Tigers shot 37 percent in the first half but flipped that by hitting 49 percent (16-of-33) in the second. CU also hit just 3-of-12 triples to start but nailed 7-of-11 in the second 20 minutes.

Five Tigers scored in double-figures led by Erik Kinney's 17 points and 17 rebounds. He was followed with 14 points by Shawn Johnson and Rod Lawrence. That pair nailed a combined five 3s – including three from Johnson in the first four minutes of the second half.

Hagen Tyler pitched in 11 points and made two triples – both in the second half – and Zach Perry finished with 10 points and also made a pair of 3s. Jalen Coates led CU with eight assists.

Campbellsville got down by as many as 12 points, 39-27, in the first half and was able to cut the deficit to 11, 43-32, at halftime.

But like the Lady Tigers, Coach Brent Vernon's Tigers answered the call and made adjustments at the break to pull out the victory.

CU erased the 11-point deficit by going on an 18-6 run to and took a 50-49 lead after Tyler made his first 3. Georgetown was able to fight back and tie the game twice – 52-all and 54-all – but never was able to regain the advantage from the Clawz of Campbellsville.

Tyler gave the Tigers the lead for good with a 3 to make it 57-54 with 11:00 left. CU was able to push its lead to as big as six points with 4:38 left, 72-66, after Coates found Kinney for a basket.

With 1:58 remaining and the shot clock at two seconds, Tyler found Coates on an in-bounds pass and he swished a fade-away 3 – the lone triple for Coates today. He struggled from the floor overall by hitting just 3-of-15 but his eight assists and three steals were crucial down the stretch.

The Coates 3 put the Tigers ahead by four, 76-72, and Campbellsville was able to hang on late by scoring only two more points.

Georgetown's Jacob Conway missed the back-end of bonus free throws and Troy Steward made a pair with 30 seconds left to pull Georgetown within one, 76-75.

On the ensuing possession for CU, Tyler was fouled and made 1-of-2 to give Georgetown a chance but Darion Burns and Chris Coffey both had opportunities to knot the game and were unable to do so.

Kinney picked up the board but missed the front-end of the bonus and fouled Conway on the rebound to give Georgetown one final opportunity. But Conway missed the back-end of the bonus to seal the win for CU.

Overall, free throws once again came back to haunt CU, as the Tigers hit 9-of-16 (56 percent). But Georgetown wasn't much better at 58 percent (7-of-12).

Campbellsville travels to Wilberforce on Monday, Feb. 20 with tipoff at 7pm ET. Fans can listen to the call started at 6:45 on the CU Sports Network.
