Second-half dry spell leads to 84-76 Tiger loss to Phoenix

LEBANON, Tenn. — With the score tied at 49-all in the second half, Cumberland ripped off eight straight points over a 53-second span and the Phoenix went on to defeat Campbellsville today, 84-76.

Once the lead increased to 13, Cumberland (11-10, 4-5 MSC) used a variety of baskets from a trio of players to keep the Tigers (12-11, 2-7 MSC) at bay. But CU did have one final run to keep things interesting.

Campbellsville led three times in the first half, once by five points, but trailed at the intermission by three, 40-37.

Hagen Tyler's 3 gave the Tigers a one-point lead early in the second half and then Elliott Young's 3 with 15 minutes remaining gave CU a two-point lead, 49-47. But that's the last time Campbellsville would see leading daylight.

With two minutes remaining, CU scored six straight points, the final two by Young, and the Tigers closed to within four, 73-69.

That's when Delaryn Dobb slipped between two Tigers for a put-back and Diondry Holt banked in a runner to extend the Phoenix lead to 77-71.

Jamonte Graham and Holt led the Phoenix with 22 and 24 points, respectively. Marquis Hickerson (12) and Dodd (13) also reach double figures.

Campbellsville was led in scoring by Erik Kinney's 14 points and 12 rebounds to complete a double-double. Rod Lawrence (13), Young (13) and Hagen Tyler and Zach Perry had 10 points apiece.

Cumberland outscored Campbellsville in the paint 46-26.

The Tigers return home Thursday, Feb. 9 for an 8 p.m. game against the University of the Cumberlands in the Powell Athletic Center.
