Turner's big day for Lady Tigers sinks Phoenix, 76-67

LEBANON, Tenn. — Lauren Turner was one point shy of a career high today, but her full stat line added up to a 76-67 Lady Tiger victory at Cumberland University, their eighth straight in the series.

Turner, the junior from Tompkinsville, Ky., scored 14 points, picked up seven steals, handed out four assists and was perfect from the free throw line.

Campbellsville (21-4, 6-3 MSC) built a 15-point lead in the first half when Emily Fox opened the second quarter with a 3-point basket. But Cumberland reeled off a 19-6 run and actually took a one-point lead (33-32) when Nichole Bowers completed a three-point play.

However, the Lady Tigers closed the half with an 8-1 run and led 40-34 at the break thanks to 12 first-half points by Lauren Turner and nine by Jordan Doram. Doram was good, but only played 11 minutes because of foul trouble, ending up with 14 points and four rebounds.

Campbellsville was led in scoring by the 16 points by Fox with four 3-pointers. Madison Stewart scored 15 points and pulled in a team-high five rebounds.

Cumberland (15-6, 4-5 MSC) was led by Bowers with 17 points. She was joined in double figures by Janisha Lindsey (14), Taliah Moore (13) and Julia Fox 12.

The Lady Tigers were outrebounded 31-25 but more than made up for it by turning the Phoenix over 16 times and draining seven of their 12 3-point shots.

After hitting 76 percent of its shots in the opening quarter, CU cooled a bit and ended up connecting on 55 percent from the field and 79 percent from the free throw line.

Campbellsville scored the first six points out of the intermission break and led by 16 points four times in the third quarter, but Cumberland never closed closer than nine points.

The Lady Tigers return home Thursday, Feb. 9 for a 6 p.m. game against the University of the Cumberlands in the Powell Athletic Center. Fans can watch on Comcast Channel 10 and tune in on 88.7 The Tiger starting at 5:45.
