Lady Tigers pull away in fourth quarter with 17-2 run, defeat Cumberlands 60-39

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Lady Tiger basketball scraped with University of the Cumberlands on Thursday night and ended up going on a 17-2 run in the fourth quarter to pull out a 60-39 victory.

The 39 points is the third-lowest scoring output CU has allowed this season – two of those have come against Cumberlands when the Patriots scored just 37 in the first matchup on Jan. 9.

Campbellsville improves its record to 22-4 overall and 7-3 inside the Mid-South Conference. Cumberlands falls to 12-12 and 3-8.

Emily Fox, who was recognized before the game for surpassing 1,000 points in her career, led all scorers with 14 points on 4-of-6 from the 3-point line and 5-of-6 overall. Jordan Doram led CU on the glass with 10 rebounds and recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 10 points as well.

Campbellsville held Cumberlands to 25 percent shooting on 15-of-59 from the floor. The Patriots were also 4-of-30 from deep (13 percent). The telling stat, though, was turnovers on both ends of the floor. Cumberlands committed 20, while the Lady Tigers felt victim to 21.

The first half wasn't pretty both ways, as Cumberlands forced a season-high 13 turnovers in the first 20 minutes of play. The Lady Tigers were able to counter that by hitting 43 percent (9-of-21) from the floor and held the Patriots to just 21 percent (7-of-34).

Both teams had cold spurts in the first period. Cumberlands started the game hot on the offensive glass – grabbing seven of its first eight rebounds on the offensive end. But the Patriots were unable to take advantage by scoring just two second chance points in the first half. UC also finished with just five offensive boards the rest of the way.

After scoring their fourth point, the Patriots missed their next 12 shots and went 2-of-17 to start the game, but CU was unable to take total control by only leading 11-4.

Madison Stewart sparked CU with consecutive buckets in the final 33 seconds to push CU's first quarter lead to eight, 15-7.

In the second stanza, Campbellsville was able to push its lead as large as 12 points, 19-7, with 6:47 on the clock, but then the Lady Tigers had their cold spell.

CU finished the first half without a basket in the final 6:09. The Lady Tigers hit just 5-of-6 free throws – four for Jordan Doram and 1-of-2 from Caitlin Hall.

The second half was a little better for CU and it jumped out to its largest lead at that time, 40-26, at the end the third quarter.

Fox started CU with a triple in the fourth quarter and she capped a 10-3 run with another triple at the 6:00 mark giving the Lady Tigers a 50-28 lead. Lexxus Graham followed suit with a 3 to push CU out to a 17-2 run with 4:21 left.

Cumberlands was able to cut the final deficit to 21 points by going 4-of-4 from the floor and ending the game on a 9-0 run in the final two minutes.

Campbellsville will now host No. 23 University of Pikeville on Saturday, Feb. 11. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET with coverage starting on the CU Sports Network at 1:45.
