CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — After his shortest stint of the season yesterday, Cumberland University's Travis Dohr came back on short rest and tossed eight strong innings to down Campbellsville in the series finale, 11-3.
Cumberland (12-12, 1-2 MSC) scored six runs in the first three innings and Campbellsville (11-9, 2-1 MSC) was unable to recover. Dohr (5-1) went eight innings, allowing eight hits and three earned runs.
Malik Evans (1-2) did not get past the third inning, tossing 2.1 innings and allowed six earned runs off six Cumberland hits. The Tigers used five total pitchers, as
Kirby Broadbent,
Indalecio Romo,
Ray Fernandez and
Dexter Cline all saw time on the bump.
Romo was one of the lone bright spots for Campbellsville on the day. Pitching in his first game back from Tommy John Surgery almost 18 months ago, he tossed 2.2 innings allowing two hits and one run while striking out three.
Dexter Cline was the lone pitcher to not allow a run to cross, tossing two innings of perfect ball.
Offensively, the Tigers were led by
Carlos Garmendia and
David Montoya who collected two hits. Garmendia (1) was joined in the RBI column with
Shane Stober, who finished with two runs batted in.
CU was able to scratch one run in the third after consecutive singles by
Brett Hamilton and
Diego Reynoso. A wild pitch by Dohr was followed with a Garmendia RBI single.
Cumberland stretched its lead to 7-1 with a run in the fourth and 8-1 with another in the sixth. The Phoenix then broke the game open with a three-spot in the eighth to go ahead, 11-1.
Stober got to Dohr in the eighth after turning on a 3-1 fastball for his first home run of the year. But Jason Wullenwaber pitched a perfect final inning to sit Campbellsville down.
Campbellsville did salvage the opening conference series of the season winning 7-3 and 1-0 on Thursday afternoon.
The Tigers will now travel to Union College on Tuesday, Feb. 14. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET. Campbellsville returns home on Wednesday, March 15 to host Indiana Tech University. First pitch at HIG Field is scheduled for 3:00.
