CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Tiger volleyball starts the Campbellsville Quad on a positive note with a 3-1 win over Lawrence Tech University in Powell Athletic Center, 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 25-23, and 25-22).
Campbellsville (8-15) gave the Blue Devils a quick 3-0 run to start the first set, then caught up to battle neck-and-neck until the set knotted at 12. A pair of attack errors by Lawrence Tech and two kills from
Rafael Cruz gave the Tigers the advantage at 16-13. Lawrence Tech went on a late 5-0 run to grab a short lead at 21-20 before Campbellsville answered with a 5-1 run to win the set 25-22.
Starting set two with a 6-1 lead, the Blue Devils (1-16) set the tone early. Down 12-6, the Tigers attempted a comeback to bring the score to 17-15, but it wasn't enough as Lawrence Tech held the lead the whole set to win it 25-20.
Campbellsville struggled again in the beginning of the third set, trailing 8-3 before calling their first timeout of the match at 10-6. The Tigers knotted the score at 11 before falling back again, then took a 9-3 run just in time to win the set 25-23.
Two service aces in the beginning of set four hoisted the Tigers to a 12-7 lead before Lawrence Tech's first timeout. The Blue Devils took a 6-0 run to tie the set at 16, but couldn't hold on. Campbellsville won the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.
Campbellsville only had 28 kills compared to Lawrence Tech's 30, but stayed ahead with a .098 hitting percentage compared to the Blue Devils' .030.
Adam Conklin led the Tigers with 10 kills, followed closely by
Bryce Johnson and Cruz with nine and eight, respectively.
Driving the defense for the Tigers were
Philip Turia and
Noel Camello with 13 and 12 digs, respectively. Turia completed his double-double with 30 assists.
The Tigers will return to the court tonight to take on Morningside College in the third match of the Campbellsville Quad at 7 p.m.
